Because many of us have started the process more than once.. only to be held up by the change of this regulation or that regulation.. I was in the middle of it all and they Changed the Law again and added the requirement of an appostiled police report.. from where ? I asked.. since I had been here 5 years. Your home, they answered. Which one, I asked. Any one, they answered.

This is a completely idiotic requirement since now I have a $300 appostiled police report from the State of NY where I have not lived for 30 years. I could be a mass murdered in North Carolina, for all they know. But lots of lawyers made money.

So by the time this thing was ordered and arrived, my medical had expired and I had to do it again.

Honestly, it is easier to just fly to Miami

Why would you want to go to Haiti in the first place. You are putting yourself in harms way. This is not advisable in any way, shape or form.

While going to Haiti may or may not be dangerous, it is now a moot point with regards to extending tourist cards. That hop across the border and back no longer works. The DR government is now forcing you to either apply for residency, return to your home country and re-enter, or pay a fine when you leave the country. If you plan to stay here, it is best to get residency and be here legally.

Not necessarily true. I have twice visited Haiti in a proper way using Caribe Tours (I didn't wade across any streams) and was not asked to pay the tourist card overstay fee on either occasion, although it was clear from my passport for how long I had been in the country and I had the correct fee ready to pay. Perhaps that regulation is not applied at the Haitian border because the chances of any money which may be collected ever reaching their masters in SD is fairly slim?

That seems perfectly fair and reasonable. There is no reason why tourists should be allowed to stay indefinitely with no proper registration and I am in process of applying for residencia. However, if I encounter repeated difficulties of the sort mountainannie reports then I might simply leave and live in another country. I like it here, but if my modest annual spend is not appreciated by the powers that be, I can easily find another Third World country where it will be.

Default Haiti is more dangerous than the DR, but coming back should not be a problem

There are several very nice hotels in P-a-P. Be sure that you have your reservation there before you go for your overnight trip. See if the hotel can arrange transportation from the airport or from the bus station. If not, be sure to get the price for the trip before you leave in the Taxi. For travel from SD, I've had good luck with Tera Bus. The bus company helps you through the border process. The buses are never delayed very long.
I strongly recommend against driving it yourself.

Yes for the U.S passport holder it would but the ferry round trip is not cheap.

I find it quite amusing that there are 18 replies, but no one seemed to actually address the question. It wasnŽt about remewing my visa, that was just background info. The question was whether or not I would have to stay outside of the country for more than one night!
But thanks anyway, the guys I was thinking about accompanying have called of the whole thing.

Modulator, could you close this thread before I get a dozen more people advising me as to how to get residency?
    Thanks
