Question DR license

I'm American, and am currently living in DR until the summer, which is when I go back to NY to finish school. I've been here for almost 4 months now, which means I've lost my "driving with an American license" priviledges. What do I do now? I don't have a cedula, I'm not a resident, my parents are Dominican. (by the way, I tried doing a search "citizen", and it yielded nothing...what am I doing wrong?) I need to get a Dominican driver's license, and I'm assuming that becoming a citizen is the easiest way to get thru all this (cedula, etc).
I called the American Embassy but the girl was clueless "I THINK you can drive with your american license only for a few days... you have to contact the dominican authorities" "Ok, what authorities? "Im not sure." (SIGH)
Can someone please give me a little guidance on this matter? Thanks so much!
Having a great time otherwise,
Heidi Madera

Heidi, just get a Dominican Drivers License and stop being frazzled, or just continue to use your US Drivers license.

she needs a cedula to get a dominican license.
to keep using your american license after the three months
could be dangerous to your finances as the insurance company
will not cover you.

After 90 days your license will not cover you.

If you are in an accident, the police will want a copy
of your papers and this includes a copy of your entry stamp.

Without this they will not issue you a police report, plus
they may make life very difficult for you.

Bottom line, you need a cedula, so you need to be at least a
resident.

Unhappy Drivers licence

I can only confirm what Robert says. You may apply for a provisional residence permit and will be given a cedula when the residence permit will be issued.
Or since your parents are Dominican and you were born in the USA you may exercise the option to become a Dominican citizen and you will be given a cedula.
I do not know how much time the second option will take.

take a fast trip to Puerto Rico. it will give you another three months.
Or a bustrip to the border ,get an exitstamp . pay
your US$10. and return.

Your options have been spelled out for you in the thread:

1) become a Dominican resident and then get your license or
2) become a Dominican citizen and then get your license or
3) go out of the country and back, get a new tourist card, and get an additional 90 days on your American driver's license.
