Strictly speaking, there is no such thing as a "working permit" or "work authorization" under Dominican immigration law. If the person planning to work in the D.R. does not want to petition for a residency permit, which automatically grants him the right to work in the country, he may apply for a residency or business visa for labor purposes ("Visa de Negocios con Fines Laborales") and renew it every year. However, at the present time, and strange as it may sound, it's easier and faster to obtain a residency permit than to obtain a residency or business visa for labor purposes. The reason for this is that applications for visas are handled by the Ministry of Foreign Relations which is a bureaucratic nightmare while residency applications are handled by the Immigration Department at the Ministry of Interior where applications are expedited in approximately 4 months from the time of filing.
