Default How much cash?

Dear all,

This is a quick, and I hope, easily answered question.

How much cash can one person carry in to the DR from another country?

Also, lets say there were four or five people, could one person carry all the cash for all the people or do they have to have it on their own person?

And one more thing, is there an age limit on what defines a 'person' for carrying cash purposes??!!

(I did think that I had read a response to a similar question on here before, but after looking I cant find it, so if there is one just let me know!)

Regards

Nick

I think if it's over US$10,000 (per person) you have to declare it.

Then again, I'm sure people bring a lot more in and never declare it.

The customs declaration given to you on your flight specifies US$10,000. You have to write down the amount on the form.

I would say not being truthful places you at peril of being arrested or having the cash seized. If you connect in the USA don't even think about it.

You can get a form in advance from US Customs online and hand it in at customs - the amount is unlimited if declared. They will seize it all if not. And fine and deport you.

NB: Cash is cash currency (in any currency) money orders , drafts, bearer bonds, traveller's cheques, anything even cheques payable to you. If you are flying non-stop you may be better off.

If I recall correctly the customs declaration is one per family so I am not sure you can get away with $10,000 in the baby's swaddling clothes. I doubt it.

Go with adequate money and have your bank wire it to your account as needed. There is no safe place to put your nest egg in the DR in US$ anyway. Not more than $10,000 that is.

Thanks,

I will be travelling from the UK, I have never before been asked how much cash I am carrying, and I have certainly never been given any forms (on the plane or otherwise) to fill out.

Is there a difference when arriving direct from the UK?

Regards

Shouldn't be. These days I believe everyone going through immigration/customs in the DR is given a form to fill out that includes the question of funds being carried with you.

If you bring more than $10,000 and they find out (unlikely) you will not be in trouble but they will confiscate anything over the $10,000.They will also go through your luggage with a fine-tooth comb as you have attracted attention to yourself.

The customs declarations form does ask if you are carrying over $10,000.

Nick
I have never had to fill out any Dominican customs form when travelling to the DR from the US. (8 times this year alone.) I have never seen a DR customs declaration form but Dominican nationals on my flights from NY do get some sort of form to fill out.

As stated above if you transit thru the US you can carry any amount BUT have to declare it on a US Customs form to be handed in and approved prior to travel. US customs have the power, and they will, to seize ALL your money (including amounts below the $10K) and not return it if it's not declared and approved. (Land of the free.... right!!)

The limit is $10k per family NOT per individual.

Do NOT attempt to do this. I may know people who have done this but they were allegedly ****ting bricks until safely thru POP airport.

The UK has no inbound or outbound currency movement restrictions on individuals, so you will have no issue from UK Customs and thus a direct flight should be OK.

Do NOT put any cash in checked baggage. It's not called Thiefrow and Gatnick for nothing LOL!!!! and if security at the UK discover the dosh in your hand baggage have a good line ready. I understand airport X-ray machines can now detect all US currency and presumably as UK Sterling has metal strips in it these will show as well.

If you get stopped at DR customs just hand the guy $5 and keep walking (allegedly). I understand DR Customs rarely interfere with UK Charter flight passengers.

good luck mate

Cheers Graham,

I thought as much, I have never even been looked at by DR customs and any cash I have will be on my person!

Looking forward to meeting up with you shortly.

it's $9,999.99 US + 1 cent.

Actually the hidden answer was in this part:

"The customs declaration given to you on your flight specifies US$10,000. You have to write down the amount on the form."

Default Consequences of declaring +10,000?

What I would like to know is what happens if one declares in the customs form that one is carrying more than 10,000 dollars? Assuming they are acquired legitimately, what does one risk? To pay a percentage fee? Does one have to provide proof they are brought for legitimate purposes? What does it take to prove they are not shady money?

What if I come from Europe, stay a couple of days in Miami visiting friends and relatives and continue from there to let's say Santiago. Do I have to pay fees twice, or what (if at all)?
