Question Could I become a citizen of the DR?

I was born in NYC in the 70s. At the time of my birth, my father was still a Dominican citizen and my mother was and is an American. Could I qualify for citizenship through descent since my dad was a citizen of the DR at the time of my birth?

By the time my brother was born a few years later, my dad had become a naturalized citizen of the US. So, I don't think my brother would have the same options as me if, in fact, I have any options.

I would appreciate any information. Thanks.

Default Citizenship

I have a friend who insists that an American citizen with no familial ties to the DR can become a Dominican citizen. Is this possible? If it is what are the advantages and disadvantages?

This is possible. I have friends that are born and bred in Texas and other states who have no Dominican background who are citizens and vote in the DR. I plan on getting mine in the next year. You need to be a resident here for 3 years first and have gone through the residency applications first.

You get a Dominican Passport if you apply for it which to me is a great benefit. You also can vote the next thief in.

How can you resist?

Gerd, for me it is just the additional passport that is of importance. I will at some point relinquish my US for tax reasons MAYBE. Not sure of consequenses yet.

A person born of a Dominican father or mother has the right to acquire Dominican citizenship by virtue of Article 11 of the Constitution and Article 26 of Law 1683 of 1948. The steps to be taken are the following:

1. Petition to the Minister of Interior.

2. Affidavit prepared by a Notary Public in which the applicant states his wish to apply for Dominican citizenship.

3.Birth certificate of the applicant, authenticated at a Dominican Consulate and translated into Spanish by an official translator.

4.Birth certificate of the applicant’s Dominican parent.

5.4 pictures, 2 x 2 inches.

6.Application and newspaper fees.

Fabio,

I understand about a person with a dominican father applying for citizenship, but can an american citizen apply for and recieve dominican citizenship along with a passport without relinquishing their US citizenship.

I know you're quite busy, so thank you for your response.
