Why/When did they change from 90 days Tourist Cards to 15 days for tourist?
if I remember corretly USA/Canadians were allowed to stay 90 days...when/why did the Dominican change this?

You could go home in 5 years and tell them you lost your Tourist card and pay a fine of $10.00.

This worked for me after over staying by 5 years.

Undoubtedly to make money. People staying longer can extend the time by paying another fee.

This is the first I've heard of this. I'm assuming you can just extend at the airport, but how much is the fee? Coming in on Wednesday for 69 days.

I dont think that things have changed. I noticed that the tourist card use to say good for 90 days, but some now says good for 15 days. That is strange, probably it's a error that they hav enot fixed.

This was instated towards the end of the past administration in order to collect more revenues. The new administration has kept the measure in place, probably for the same reasons.

Basically, to stay up to 90 days you would pay an additional RD$150, or an extra US$5 at today's rate at the airport upon departure.

There is a maximum fee of RD$2,000 for staying illegal for more than seven years.

Thanks for this info. I called the DR Consulate before I got your reply and they faxed me the info. They told me they instituted this policy in mid October. There is a sliding scale upwards to RD$2000. For example,
3 months to 9 months = RD$250, 9 months to 1 year =RD$300, etc.,etc.

When I left the DR through POP airport last week, customs asked me how long I had stayed. They had never asked me that question before. Since it was only 2 weeks, nothing else happened. So now I know why the guy wanted to know...

That sounds incorrect. When I came back from holland in the summer to the DR had the 15 days text as well.

Probably the new government changed the fees in October and that is why October is mentioned. The shortening of the stay for the US$10 tourist card fee to 15 days, I believe dates back to early 2004 or even 2003.
