Default Whorehouses, legal or not?

My question is directed to Mr. Guzman. A large operation, clearly advertized on the internet to be in the sex trade, is operating in our private tourist community.
Are there any legal ways to shut them down? Thank you. Canadian Bob.

I just wanted to add that there are 5 brothels in Puerto Plata, at least a half dozen in Santiago and a few dozen in the Capital. They are owned by Dominicans. There must be a reason for a place like Passions, located in Santiago. Weddings are held there at times and it costs around $80 a night for a lady. I wonder who that is geared towards?

I'll defer to Fabio, but I would wonder if they are illegal as opposed to legal. In other words, are there specific laws outlawing them (making them illegal) or is the subject moot in the laws of the land (making them legal).

One recommendation I can offer to shut one down is to contact the local churchs and mayors. Unless they are already 'on the payroll' you may be able to get them to create such a fuss it would be easier for the brothel to leave. I assume you have neighbors who can help form a community effort to achieve this?

Let's hope this isn't one of the "big players" in the country. They are too tied in to do anything other than put your house up for sale. Zoning is not a strong suit here.

Where is this place so I can stay away from it?!?

My friends are at BlackBeards as I type. They are swimming and drinking and eating. Sounds like a great place. They mentioned that the beach was packed as well, thats great news.

It sounds like someone is stirring-up unneccessary trouble. Live and let live is my motto. Be careful that it doesn't come back and bite you in the azz. Also, if its only to the attention of Mr. Guzman then next time you might consider emailing him directly.

Blackbeards is nice, to be sure, but this can't be the place Canadian Bob was talking about. His concerned sounded more like a neighbor decided to get into the sex trade. Right?

Tehama may be right...stirring a hornets nest is dicey at best. That said, if someone opened up one next to my place you can bet I'd be stirring up a fit!

This type of Hotel has been there for 3 years. I ate there in the restaurant and it served good food. Usually there are alot of friendly guests staying there.

Please stay on topic. This is about the legality of an establishment, not a gate!

Default The OP was most definately

referring to Blackbeards. He was complaining about it in another thread which was just closed by Robert.

His legal question is legit. I tried the "advanced search" feature for the first time (very cool), and came up with this thread where Sr. Guzman addresses the issue (sort of).

http://dr1.com/forums/showthread.php...t=prostitution

Whether a "whorehouse" is legal or not seems to depend on whether a "third party" profits directly from the perfectly legal exchange of sexual services for money. My observation is that the businesses in the DR who have women available for sex carefully and cleverly avoid this direct connection. Some places charge a "salida", which is technically paid by the girl (after recieving it from the customer) to relieve her of her obligation to be present as an "attraction" to customers and allow her to leave the premesis. Other places charge a fee to use the rooms they have on site. All perfectly legal as far as I can tell. Other places simply allow (and probably "encourage") girls to hang out there because they attract men who buy their booze and food and rent their hotel rooms. The girls are customers too, although they seldom pay for their own drinks or food.

2 interesting things about Blackbeards are that although they will no doubt swear that the girls who hang there are "independent", they do have a staff member who acts as a sort of "mamasan". I have also heard that the girls pay a small fee to be there, and the management is involved in establishing a maximum price for services. If a girl asks for more, she is supposedly "banned".

Detailed directions (preferably with a map) will make this place even easier to avoid.
