In a recent thread on renewing residency, Fabio said go to Santo Domingo. He didn't speak specifically about Santiago, but one of the posters before Fabio asked about renewing in residency. I interpret his statement about going to SD as a response to that question.
This is of interest to me, too, because Barbara and I must renew our residency.

i was just told by a lawyer that it can be done in santiago but it seems residency is not her speciality so I am not buying her words 100%.
I would like to know if the rules have changed and now maybe we can get it done in santiago.

Just a few weeks ago we found that we could not go to Santiago for a renewal. To the Big City we go!

AZB, both Chris and I have told you we have been told it is not possible. You live in Santiago, why not drive over to the office and ask them, then tell us.

Well, thanks alot to all the legal experts. I guess I would have to make a trip to the immigration office myself to hear it from the horse's mouth. I was told that the rules have changed but I guess no one knows that for a fact. I will write my info as soon as I get my ass over there.
By the way, does anyone know the working hours of the immigration office in santo domingo? Last time I went there early in the morning and got seriously stuck in the traffic. I wonder if I can go there like 12pm and still get my thing done?

The immigration office in santiago is totally useless. No one tells you the right information. I was told that my card can be renewed here and then they gave me papers to do the residency from the scratch. So I knew they had no clue what I wanted. So I insisted in talking to the person with authority. Finally after a long wait the person comes and tells me that I must go to santo domingo to do the renewal. They simply take papers in from people who are applying for residency and then everyone has to go to capital for the final phase anyway (get the card). They don't have the machine that prints out the cards for residency (carnet) so everyone has to go to santo domingo to get the card. In my opinion, the office in santiago is useless.

I had previously responded to this question...so here it is again
I had to get my permanent residency, from my temporary residency...I do not know if this is what you are asking...but I went to the immigration office off of the Malecon,in SD,about 10am,was directed to cajas on the right side of the room, paid my fee,got a document and was told to return the next day for new cedula...went back the next am,was directed to caja on left side of the room, gave them the document from day before, was told I would be called, and in about 20 min.,I was called for new photos to be taken, then new cedula was issued in about 5 min...I went the second day around 10am again...was never very busy...lots of Lawyers there doing their thing for people..
hope this helps....

Cedula?
For the cedula you don't have to pay and it's done at a different place.
