Civil Status?

Immigration Canada has requested the following:

"1) Authorization from the child's mother for the daughter to reside permanently in Canada with him / civil status must be accurate"

Could some please clerify what is meant by 'civil status'.

Civil Status is one of the following: Single, Married, divorced or widow
