Wasn't it Fiji??? Mick Jagger that is. I am British. Married to Dominican man in DR. Have been advised that unless I have my marriage legalised in UK (Translate papers, take to local office of marriage, death, divorce in UK in English for registration) then I am not married under UK law. Fine by me. Married in DR but not in UK. No problem!!!

Generally, a marriage in a foreign country is recognized as valid in the country of citizenship of any of the spouses unless a provision of public order is violated (for example, a polygamous marriage will not be recognized in the DR).

Thanks again for the replies!

Mr Guzman, could you confirm that a divorce in the DR in my case, would be legal in the UK?

Cheers!

All I can say is that it will be legal in the Dominican Republic. Only UK laws (and solicitors) can answer your question.

So does that mean that if I am married in the UK I can then come to the DR and marry someone else and it would be ok? Mmm don't know what I would do with 2 husbands but I'm curious

No!! If you are marrid in the UK you have to get divorced and provide your divorce cert here before you get married here. methinks anyway.

What Matilda means is that you will be asked to provide a Certificate of Non-Married Status.
DR marriages are recognized around the world.

however, the recent reports that hundreds and perhaps thousands of 'marriages' were "celebrated" by unscrupulous civil officials that did not register the ceremonies and which marriages are not legal here or anywhere, has raised the spectrum of so many people living "illegally" .....and of course the lawsuits will most certainly follow...

However, the OP wants to know if he/she can be divorced in the DR, and the answer is, of course, and a lot cheaper than in the UK....In fact the cost difference would pay for the flights over and back!!

Talking If the OP got married in a resort in Punta Cana.....

might be worth checking if indeed they are married given the recent scandal regarding improper civil 'authorities'..........

It may well be they weren't married at all!

We were married in Puerta Plata. And received the certificate after about 14 days. Looks like it was most probably done correctly.

Thanks for all the replies again... has given me much to think on!

Cheers!
