Question CAFTA and Tax Question......

.......I was having a conversation with someone regarding importing certain appliances under CAFTA to the DR that are tax free and they said that even though they were "tax free" there was still another tax of around 10% had had to be paid.............

...........when mentioning that, I remember reading an article within the last month or two that had a headline such as: "customs to stop charging illegal tax" which was referring to what he was talking about.........

I have now searched and searched Google / Dominican Today / El Faro / Puerto Plata Digital etc and CAN'T SEEM TO FIND IT...!!!!

.....I know that I was not dreaming.......

Has anyone seen the article I was talking about???

Thanks

Perhaps you are referring to the ITBIS or value-added tax which is 16%? Most The ITBIS is applicable to the transfer and importation of most goods.

Lightbulb FOUND the article...........

............and the whole time it was on DR1 !!!!!!!! (the DR1 daily news)

Customs removes tax
The Customs Department has removed the 10% tax of the value of the Cost, Insurance and Freight (CIF) on reshipments because the tax is illegal under the terms of the DR-CAFTA trade agreement. Listin Diario explains that the tax was contrary to article 3.8 on import and export restrictions, found in chapter 3 on National Market Access.

............that was what I remembered reading but couldn't find.
