In return she made one sale, which due to the complexities of any Dominican real estate transaction, probably won't close for another few months.
Perhaps with her limited knowledge of the Spanish language and Dominican men, she mistook normal male behavior in the DR for harassment. Who knows? My secretary would get bent out of shape if I didn't complement her on her appearance each day, whereas the same behavior in NA would have been grounds for an attorney to come after either her or me (I would have the same protection there against an aggressive female, wouldn't I?)
Tell her to chalk it up to experience, and either find a job here which is better suited to her needs, or else go back to where she came from. I agree with Robert, she doesn't have a chance in heck to get the satisfaction she apparently wants here in the DR.

Yes i do agree, everyone has a different take on what harrassment is. I have only had two quick phonecalls with her so i am not sure of the exact details. I used to work in an all male enviroment with carpenters, electricians and builders and it coould get pretty blue to say the least but i joined in like one of the boys and loved it, thought it was hilarious. But like i stated before (well i think i did), She is more mad that she got fired for saying "NO" as i believe she was handling it quite well. She hasnt had a fit and accused him of anything, just upset that she has lost her job because he was not getting it. I think that makes a huge differance, she isnt trying to cause waves just get the money that he owes her, and yes the sale she made has closed and he owes her commission for that also.

I did not however post it to be attacked simply for asking advice, i believe in a very polite manner. I came here for advice, i am a very busy woman and would appreciate posts from people who have advice not from people who have nothing better to do than attack people for seeking help. I wonder if i would have had the same answer had i been a man seeking advice mmmmmm?

It never ceases to amaze me how people show their tru colors at the drop of a hat. Well, my dear, if you would permit me to be so bold--let me tell you where I got my education from. I have a young lady in my life that I have known my entire life. She is VERY smart. VERY bright. And handles the biggest discrimination cases for the largest firms in the world. Partner in a NYC law firm-take no surviors law firm in the heart of Manhattan.
Tuaght me every thing I know about this subject Miss Powderkeg-Internet lawyer. I taught her how to change her own diaper. You got it? I taught her-she teaches me--like father and daughter.
Now go back to your corner with whatever your agenda is and suck your thumb about who is rude and who knows what they are talking about.
What a waste of time.
Love you too mi amor

Quid Pro Quo = Something for something = Put up and get something. Very old practice in my beloved DR..

Dear Laurajane,
I'm afraid that I have to agree that your friend either knew what the real deal was, or is incredibly naive.
$1,000 US/month plus commissions, plus a car, plus an apartment is unheard of.
What real estate agent gets $1,000 US/month plus commissions, anywhere in the world, let alone the free car and apartment?
I believe that your friend is lying to you or is one of the dumbest persons on Earth.
If it's too good to be true, it's because it ain't true.
Surely you can see this too, can't you?

A young dominican woman would happily hand out sexual favors for such a gig.
But in the DR gigs like that do not exist. Your friend is lying, and you need to tell her to come back home.
This is a fight she will lose. I knew something was wrong with this whole story the second I read "she signed a contract but doesn't have a copy of it".

Berzin - probably a "language blip" but laurajane lives in the DR - the friend came over for the job and she should go home, I agree.
laurajane - it is always a problem when it is someone close to you that is involved in something like this. I don't know how good a friend she is or how reliable to tell the absolute truth but it does seem strange that she has absolutely no paperwork whatsover and then think she has any sort of leg to stand on regarding employment rights. She has been working illegally. Like Robert is always telling us - if you cut corners in the DR it comes back to bite you.
I promise you that if you are able to - take a step back and look at it from either an outsiders view or with a fresh pair of eyes and you will see that what you are being told is the only possible way out of it.
Your friend has been very naieve or she is indeed not telling you the whole
story/truth. It really doesn't read right - and you know I am on your side!
Be a good mate now, offer her a roof and encourage her to move on or out but put this behind her. Just another DR learning experience i am afraid!!

Laurajane--I really don't have a "male only agenda" nor do I have the time to engage in a pi87ing match with you. In the first post in this thread to you I mearly asked if you knew the facts, ie:How do you know your friend is telling the truth and all the facts? Then I asked about your knowledge of sexual harrassment suits that are today's "war cry" when one feels that they have not been treated fairly. That's all I said. No abuse or ATTACK.
AND no need to tell you I know a smattering about this subject or that my DD is an expert in this field.
Off course if you or your friend can pony up $400 an hour I'm sure her firm can give you more than free friendly advise like I tried to do.
Have a brite sunny day,
JE
