Default Citizenship

I was just wondering if anyone here knows if in order to get your Dominican citizenship and you are the child of Dominican parents and at least 18 years old, do you have to reside in the country in order to obtain it.

Thanks!

No... It all depends where you reside as well...

If the country where you reside is host to a Dominican consulate, you can do all your required paperwork there; if not you'll be required to visit the closest Dominican consulate to your country (not the best choice since it will require many documents to be certified in a country that you don't reside in the first place) or, go to the DR and file there.

Okay great, I live in Boston so the consulate is right there. Now does anyone know what exactly I need and how much more or less will it cost?

I think the best way to get your Dominican citizenship is doing a " Declacion tardia " de tu nacimiento in the Dominican Republic. So you will get a birth certification and later you can have your cedula .

If you were born in the US of Dominican citizen parent, you will not need to do a Declaracion Tardia as Bachata suggests. You will just need to go through the Ministry of Interior and Police procedure for applying for a Dominican citizenship through right of parentage. The equivalent of a birth certificate you will get is merely the Spanish translation of your US birth certificate. Make sure that all documents that are translated are correct, because any correction will be very costly. Do a search of the forum to find threads where they give you the step by step procedure to get your Dominican citizenship.

This question has been asked many times before. Use this link on the DR1 Knowledgebase and follow the procedure step by step: Dominican Republic News & Travel Information Service - Support (DR1)

The only thing you must do in the US is have your American birth certificate certified by the Dominican Consulate. There may be a few steps you can accomplish, like getting your birth certificate translated, but you will have to come to the DR to do this process.

I've already been through the process and it's not that bad if you follow these instructions.

I second Bachata, it is easier and less expensive if you do a "Declaracion Tardia", many Native Dominican do it every year.

The steps that "Tjmurray" provided, i see too much drama there, and too much money too.

A Declaracion Tardia would only be valid if the person can prove having been born in the DR, which doesn't seem to be the case.

Dolores are you Dominican? His parent can say that he was born in the house in a "campo" and they didn't have time to register him at birth, it happens everyday.

To answer your question, yes, she is Dominican. Also, your advice is horrible. Cutting corners will only spell out trouble for you down the road.

Believe me, it's best to do things by the book, if not, you could find yourself in a world of you know what.
