Default What can I do when I find out my husband has 1 or 2 more wives?

Hello, I'm an American who married a Dominican on Feb 17th, 2007 (after knowing him for 3 yrs). He then married a Canadian on Jan 15th, 2008. Neither one of us knew about the other. Then I find out he may have married a New Yorker the year before me and never once was divorced. I've talked to various attorneys who assure me that bigamy and polygamy are illegal in D.R., but they're still telling me we (me and the Canadian)have to get a divorce. They also say that since WE'RE the ones wanting a divorce that WE'RE the ones who have to pay for it. I don't understand why our marriages aren't null and void since he's already married. Our con artist husband is also a Sanky. I'm beginning to believe ALLLLL Dominican men are the same and look out for each other so that no one gets into any trouble. Our husband laughed in my face and told me that he will never, ever go to jail b/c he is a Dominican male and that in that country the men rule. Is there really nothing we can do to make him pay to try to protect other women from him? I've already told every single one of my female friends NEVER to go to the Dominican Republic and that all the men are horrible. I've seen and heard their lies with my very own eyes and ears. Is there anything we can do? And do we REALLY have to pay for a divorce? I don't know why the marriages even count since he entered them fraudulently...

Now I understand why you needed the Puerto Plata Estado Civil office. Read this thread
Bigamy/Polygamy Puerto plata

The reason for getting your 'marriage' annulled would be to protect yourself & your assets in case husband tries to take economic advantage. No, all the men aren't horrible but I understand your feelings & some of them are annoyance with yourself for allowing yourself to be duped. A few months/years down the line you'll be able to get it all in perspective. Good luck to you.

I second what Santa110, make sure he'll never get a visa again, send all the documents from him that you have to the American and Canadian Embassies.

Ezequiel.
I'm surprised at you.
Your advice is good, but I didn't think you would let the OP get away with saying,

Fair enough.
And you're right, assuming the story is true, she is hurting and the dude deserves to be strung up by his toes, and the OP can definitely use our help.

Some days it is hard not to be a bigot.
It is a noble quest defending Domincan men at times.
It is an old joke perhaps, but it has been said that all men are dogs - except dogs are faithful!
I would posit that being seen to be honest is less important to Dominicans than to Americans or Canadians - not necessarily that Dominicans are less honest than Americans and Canadians.(although perhaps they are.)
I feel for this lady, but I am not surprised - terrible all round.
I feel sorry for her too, but everybody know that you shouldn't look for love/boyfriend/husband/wife in the tourist area of any country not just the DR, unless you love the deceiving sweet talk of the Sanky Pankys.

If you really want to teach this guy a lesson, you should take a little trip to the DR. Find your way to the prosecutor's office for the protection of women and children, and have criminal charges filed against "your husband". Make a small cash contribution to the prosecutor in charge, and you'll get your revenge.
