Is it possible to DIY residency/ citizenship without paying $1500 to a lawyer but still waiting a year or longer?

Any sort of manual/ guidelines?

This young family of three arrives in April and they are on a budget. She is a high skilled USA certified dogs` groomer/hairdresser with eight years experience.

Any job for her? Acceptable English, no Spanish so far...
