If I married a Dominican woman. Would I need residency to work in DR?

Is it easier to get residency if I marry her in DR? Do I still have to pay $1,500 & get blood test's & chest x-ray's and everything?

Yes. Its more like $4,000 though, at least thats what I paid a few months ago.

The law isn't equal (ie foreign woman marries Dominicano is automatically Citizen but not vice versa) and apparently its in for amendment at the moment, but how long that law change can take is like asking how long is a piece of string......

Resign yourself to the fact... (as have I) that you have to go through all the motions...lots of paper.. get this from here... get that from there.... get this certified in your country of Residence.... blah blah...

Its a long road ahead my friend..... if you have no patience then employ a lawyer to help, otherwise you will lose the plot!

Lightbulb I did it all

I hired a referred attorney in Santo Domingo and it was a little over RD 5000. The attorney was quite good and smart. She did everything except the blood test for me. there were NO hoops to jump through but as I was told, it took 6 months to the day. After I applied, I returned to the states and returned to receive my residencia tarjetta. One thing that is annoying though, it is never used as identification here. You MUST get a cedulla for everything. Cheap and easy to receive after you get the residencia tarjetta. One last thing, the government takes FOREVER to post your identification on their all knowing nationwide computer system. I had to return to Santo Domingo and pay more money for a legal certificate, about 300 pesoes and take this and show wherever I needed the cedulla for I.D.
Such as credit, new bank account, etc. Good Luck

Pesos or dollars?

Search the threads here about "residency" and you will get all the info you need. You'll find that you can pay as much as you want or less than US500 to make it happen.

Not true. If a foreign woman marries a dominican man she is eligible for citizenship after 6 months of marriage, but it is not automatic. You have to apply and you have to pay.

exactly, and i hear it costs quite a lot.
many companies will hire you without cedula/residency but not having one will be a pain in the neck if you want to drive (you need cedula to get dominican driving license and you need DR license to be covered by car insurance).
as chip says - if you can do it yourself it's not that expensive.

Apologies Matilda, you're quite right. I meant that it requires only the one application and you're done.

Unfortunately, us Men have to go back 4? times to get to the same stage. 4 lots of application form, 4 lots of fees, 4 lots of certified documents in country of origin.......
