Indeed, he got lucky! What happens if he has to use the weapon and wounds or kills somebody?

He's totally screwed if he's caught with that unregistered handgun.

because the cal 40 is highly prohibited to be possessed by private persons here. the bigger cal's are only for officials.
and his firearm is illegal, he has no papers for it. so nobody will sell him the shots in a regular gunshop, he would need to present his gunlicense for that caliber there to purchase shots.
on this thread we are talking about the legal ways of gun possession,
not some street dogs illegal actions.

Everyone is pretty much right. the only way u can travel with a firearm over here is on official Federal or military Assignment. Meaning a federal agent or Federal Police officer, or military personnell on official Relocation helping the dominican officials catch international Criminals and or Train them. in which case u can fly with ur standard issue firearm u qualify with and up to 2 Backup Weapons. (whatever caliber Especially since Feds use .40 and military use .9mm) and whatever ammo they supply u with including ammo for your Range qualifying time (yes even though the dominican authoritys dont have to qualify every 3 or 6 months after they leave the academy like the americans do. any american federal person carrying a firearm does, even though they're not in the u.s.

I did my homework on the gun import before I moved here. I did not want to take any risk, so I did not "packed" any of my guns. Even checked trough furniture, vehicles for any ammo.
However somehow -and it was purely my mistake- I have left 3 rounds of 30.06 cal. rifle ammo in my ATV's bag. It did cost me US$ 800 to "calm down" the inspectors at the aduana.
There goes 1/3 of my DR Glock!!

right,
and you've been even with that 'calm down' ammount lucky, it could have cost you a very long time waiting for your container while they inspect it piece by piece by lil piece for illegal firearms fisrst and a couple of months later still at customs of course with the doggies piece by piece by li piece again for drugs and thena couple months later after several 'calm down' approaches......
ha ha ha
i would highly recommend to everybody, new or ole time expat, not to take any risks on the firearms theme throu customs.
it can end really bad for absolutely no benefit to await.
why should somebody bring a illegal firearm into the country??
there's today's no way to legalize it later on, so it always stays illegal.
that means you could get in deep shi$$ using it even if it would be in 100% true selfdefense in your own home here.
you could not sell it for any valuable profit.
because while legal firearms cost used 2-4 times the bucks of the same firearm brand new purchased in the US/Europe even more expensive, without the legal papers to the gun it will be worth nearby nothing to sell it somewhere.
a illegal firearm of all brands can be purchased here on the streets for a few hundred bucks, sometimes for much less, so how much to expect to sell such object for ?, sold by a foreigner without the right connections to sell/offer that piece?, with the risk to offer that piece to the wrong guy and get kicked in jail for illegal firearm trade on the street?
just don't even think about it,
no benefit possible on such action.

Well, That's what they wanted to do, a piece by piece inspection. Big thanks to my shipping agent/ broker and some Benjamins to changed their minds.
The thing is I even left my daughter's BB gun in the US because of my custom broker's advice. He told me, if they find anything illegal it will cost more than it worth. I absolutely didn't want any delay and problems.
Well, I still managed to screw it up.
Thanks God I could bring my Hoyt Vipertec and with that my accuracy on 30 yards is the same as with my Kimber
