A Dominican friend's last child was born after her divorce and the father refused to be the father of record on her birth certificate. The mother has asked me to be the father of record because she fears that not having a father will stigmatize her daughter in school. The mother's lawyer says that it will not obligate me to anything if I am the recorded father but I would like to be sure this is true. The child was born five years before my first visit to DR so there is no question that I am the biological father.

I wouldnt do it, you never know what will happen in the future and if she needs money it will be youe resonsibility to prove you are not the father. The passport thing might not cut it b/c she might say u changed it. #2 the child will not be stigmatized b/c whose going to know do you know haow many children are in Dr with out fathers.......Save yourself a lot of headches just continue to be a good friend

Once you are on that birth certificate you are papi, with all the legal ramifications that go along with it.

The mother does not need the father to sign anything, not even his cedula to name him on the BC.

I know my daughters mother did it.

My sister-in-law had twins and named the father on the birth certificate, even though the father refused to acknowledge the kids were his.

Later in court she won and he was ordered to support the kids.

Sounds like the mother wants someone on the hook and your friend appears to be the bait.

What a lame excuse, but it looks like she may have found a sucker to do it!!!!!!

Go ahead, there's no risk in doing that. You should also provide them with your Social Security number, bank accounts and credit cards numbers and pins and some signed blank checks.

This spells trouble on all sides. First as people have mentioned if you are the father of record the woman can go after you for child support, etc. Second you could get into a lot of trouble for forging papers. I think the motive here could be the mother would like her child to eventually get US citizenship, but if you try to do this and they find out that she's not your kid and you willingly signed the birth certificate (5 years later) they could get you for giving false information.

Anyhow I don't see any upside to this and the story of the child being stigmatized in school is week at best.
