I can't explain to you what exactly those fees are. I have a Czech friend who lives in POP and when I asked him why all the cars in the country suck he told me you basically have to pay the DR government the amount the car is worth (or what they deem it's worth) in taxes. This only replies to imported cars. So a $4,000 car will cost you another $4,000 in taxes. I don't know if my info is fact but that's what he told me.

Close to $3,000 US in taxes on a car that is worth between $4,500 and $6,000 in the US. In addition you need to pay the shipping and any brokerage fees.

Are there any other fees or taxes above and beyond what Dr. Guzman has pointed out above?

Welcome to The DR. You forgot to mention the bribes you'll have to pay to get it out of customs.

I like it this way though. It keeps traffic from getting even more hectic than already is and allows those of us who can afford a car to appear superior to those who can't. It let's people like AZB pick up educated, good looking girls from UTESA who are "A pie"....and you don't even need a fancy car (An older Toyota Camry will do). Can you imagine if everyone could afford a car in The DR What would happen to us the Toyota Camry driving elite...I shudder just thinking about it.

HI

Interesting read. I have just finished building a home in DR, and las month travelled to collect my Residency (temp for 1 year) and cedula etc. I had read that it is possible to import 1 time your car and household goods with exemption on taxes or a reduced rate, is this the case ?

I am thinking on shipping in 1 40' container, car and all furnishings etc, but wondering if it maybe best to sell and buy locally.

Also, I need to have a statement of confirmation to the effect that the DR does not have an Embassy or Consular service in the country I am shipping from ( I work in the UAE - Dubai), the nearest being in Doha, Qatar, but if I need to get the docs attested etc ????

Thanks in advance

FM
