Default Travel with expired Dominican resident card/ID

Hello,
I work here in the States on a visa. I want to go back to the DR but my Dominican resident card and Cedula expired about 4 years ago!. Can I still enter DR with expired documents? I called the DR consulate here in NY countless times and all they do is forward me to different people and haven't given me an answer. Please let me know if anyone has done this before or can tell me what to do!

Minac.

My husband lives in Toronto, Canada. He travels with his Dominican passport and Canadian Permanent Resident Card (although he's almost a citizen yaaahhh) when we go to the DR. His cedula has been expired for 3+ years and it's never been a problem because they don't ask to see that when we go. They just want to see his passport.
