maybe. our honorary consul here works closely with a dominican rescue team in that area. we were thinking about going there. but miesposo is not enthusiastic about it: mosquitoes, cold and, mostly - all this walking! 
but yes, i would love to climb pico duarte one day. maybe when we have a visitor who likes adventure more than drinks at the pool?

No mosquitoes as is too cold. They said they should have taken gloves, and didn't really have enough warm clothing, and that is in August. Imagine it in February! Just think how far 48 kms is and start practising. You could walk to your cake shop in Cabarete which is 30km from POP, have a cake and walk half way back, just to start with. Then you need to imagine it uphill. Mind you you could walk and he could ride on the mule.

Thank you, reading your blog post I just realized I had Dengue a few years ago back in Puerto Plata...
Had a bad tooth at the same time and I took an antibiotic. Shortly after I was very sick. I was blaming the pill later, never investigating further but reading your description now the symptoms fit 100 %. Wow...
