Default Cell Phone Providers

One of my friends told me that verizon provides service in DR, but when I called them with the US number from the website, they told me this was not the case. Is the Verizon in the DR separate from the US company? Or is the cell phone operator just not educated?

It is a completely separate company.
Bring the phone into a Verizon store, every major own has one in DR and have them put a Dominican number on the phone. This is free and takes 10 minutes, just buy phone cards as needed.

This is assuming you have a CDMA phone which must Verizon phones in The US are.

DO NOT roam in DR with your US number, it is quite costly. It takes 10 seconds to switch your number back to your Stateside number, or bring a phone for exclusive DR use.

Have it unlocked by T Mobile in the States for free.
There is a small charge to unlock it in The DR, and you will need to buy a SIM card @ Orange, NOT Verizon since you neglected to mention you had a GSM phone.

Good luck.
