Good luck!
Unfortunately, the cards on that site bill in 3 minute increments and charge weekly fees (starting after the first use). It makes for a lousy card unless you plan on using the card in one shot.

Also, I'm not sure what the 15%/20% tax is all about? It seems like it's just another hidden fee.

Thanks so much everyone for your help!!! I really appreciate it! I happen to be in Chicago and although I have amistades dominicanas, there's really not a whole lot for dominicans in our area. Any suggestions for a paper card in Chi?

Oh, and I'm not looking for long distance, although that's a great thing to keep in mind if things get more serious. Thanks!

Skype is a great hook up for computer use; and very clear. It only runs a couple of cents (US) per minute. If both people have Skype, there is no charge for the call. And, like I said, it is the clearest connection that I've had.
I have used a basic Sprint rechargable card, in the past and when I am calling from locations aways from my home, that I bought at Costco. It runs about 15 cents per minute. Not a good deal but reliable when calling from a pay phone.

I use the "Hot Dog" card that they sell in the bodegas here in New York. I call from home phone here to home phone there and get an hour for 2 bucks.

I use any new card that is out there. Right now Oye is pretty good. But whatever is advertised as new I get - they usually have the best rates.

According to their website the rates 8.7 cents to a land line, 17.2 cents to a cell phone (plus a 3.9 cent connection fee). I'm surprised I thought they were much cheaper, their rates are more than my long distance carrier.

Default go with the VIP

Similar to TEL3 we use VIP Communications it's a prepaid you can charge your debit or credit card and if you choose the Plan Economico Latino to a cell it's only $.13 and a land line a little less and calls are billed by the minute. Up until about 3 months ago 829 area code was a landline phone rate. The great thing is you can program or authorize certain originating numbers line your home phone or a cell phone and all you do is dial the access line and your pin automatically registers...we've found it much better than having to guess how many minutes xxx card from a bodega will get ya....

This sounds like one of the better ones.
  • 14 cents a minute (The 13 cent rate requires you calling an 703 area code access number, which unless the phone you are calling from has unlimited domestic calling, you need to use their toll-free access number)
  • Bills in 1 minute increments
  • No connection or maintenance fees

This one charges 11.5 cents a minute, but has a 49 cent per month fee.
