You might not have had the opportunity to view the video interview which the victim gave after she was rescued - I would urge you to look at it. There is nothing 'high & mighty' about this lady whatsoever.
And as Janin says, the perpetrators of these crimes are NOT the really poor people. They are the small number of
criminal people. Usually, criminals here are in the strata of society which has more assets than the really poor. Numbers wise, there are far more really poor people than there are criminals although one could argue that the latter group is growing.
Had you said, sylindr, that it isn't wise for foreigners to flaunt wealth I would have agreed with you. But your comment presupposes that the motivating factor for crime by Dominicans is envy and I have never found envy to be a significant Dominican trait. The motivating factor is opportunism by people so inclined to commit crimes. But if someone is
not of a criminal persuasion then they won't commit a crime. And in my opinion the more education people have the more they are likely to demand their
rights, as human beings, not to turn to a life of crime. I think we need to distinguish between moral and economic issues.
