Horrible story, but I don't think that it changes your assessment of kidnapping generally affecting the wealthy more than the middle class.
The story above is more like a family dispute and barely qualifies as a kidnapping.
The mother even sent the daughter to her boyfriend's with his suitcase.

Default Extranjeros misfortune...

Whithout a doubt, many Dominicans feel and truely believe, that "all" Extranjeros (American, Canadian and others) are all wealthy. This sad misunderstanding will create problems for many of us in the months to come. As I believe, the Dominican government will not and has not taken the necessary steps to ensure Extranjeros safety. I predict there will be an upswing on violent crimes toward/on Extranjeros in the months to come, fueled by the false expectations of FAST CASH. There are big problems that lay in wait below the thin ice (false sence of security) we skate on daily living here. Perhaps Eastcoastmike had the right idea....yes, I am being paranoid or perhaps a bit negative, but that is how I feel. I am sick on what is going on in the DR....It was a beautiful place to live..

Wow.
Funny how 2 people can see the same situation and have such diverging viewpoints.
I'm so impressed at how fast the cops keep on catching the kidnappers and rescuing the victims, that I would expect the exact opposite that you do.
I figure the criminals will be looking at other ways to make money, as their track record is really really poor.

I have learned that one of fellows (a family member of one of those implicated in this kidnapping) was "HIT" this week. He was one of those that they never found, but were looking for him. He was at home in Samana on his front poarch (galeria) while his wife was cooking around back. He took two rounds in the head and two in the heart. A silencer was used and nobody heard the rounds going off. There were people nearby. Sounds like someone does not want people to talk about this crime. The "Brain" behind this kidnapping is trying to tie-up loose ends? You bet!
