I got a hold of an old buddy of mine, from high school, that works in Codetel's alphabet city and so far he says that they're currently having problems with switches. He didn't specify if CISCOs at the portal or top level of the backbone, but since the problem is being captured mostly in the internal servers. Most likely than not, it's a very hard problem to pin-point without shutting down for over 10 or more hours and taking the redundancy backups off-line (something they rather don't).
So, expect more problems for the immediate time being...

Codetel (Verizon), ever since sold to Slim has lacked new upgrades to the copper subsystem and only the OC and Cell has seen major investment...

I asked on this and he said that Codetel's copper service has been given a TOS rather than keep building atop a timed technology. So far the onslaught from other cell services is taking a heavy toll on Codetel's pool of new customers...

The aim is to provide TV Cable/Internet/Voip services via a new backbone that is being installed by Codetel in the background.

I wonder how they're going to switch the links from Copper to OC without taking the switches off line... Hmmmmm...
I going to do some research about Codetel in the corporate financial news to see if any deals have been struck with a Copper/OC merchant this past year...

It wouldn’t surprise me at all, since OC is the only possible way to keep market share and growth against the Satellite and Cable's upswing in the DR...

I fail to see the logic, not that I care one way or another, but if two US companies merged and owned Codetel, how does that make it a Canadian company?

That is a question for lawyers, fact is that Codetel has always been Canadian since it was created by Anglo Canadian Telephone Company back in 1930 ( http://www.codetel.com.do/pdf/historia.pdf ) and probably still is, for taxes purpose.
Aniway Rocky, I don't care much about their nationality, my point was that a few years ago we were, in tlc, at the same level with the best in the world and now, sadly, we are way behind.

Perhaps it's time to pull out my "Dear Codetel" for you.
Feel free to modify it to your needs and circumstances, then mail away....

Quote:
Dear cretins,
I have been a Codetel customer since 9th July 2001, when I signed up
for your 2-in-one deal for internet hi-speed modem and telephone.
During this three-month period I have encountered inadequacy of
service which I had not previously considered possible, as well as
ignorance and stupidity of monolithic proportions.
Please allow me to provide specific details, so that you can either
pursue your professional prerogative, and seek to rectify these
difficulties - or more likely (I suspect) so that you can have some
entertaining reading material as you while away the working day
smoking Marlboros and drinking cuba libres.
My initial installation was cancelled without warning, resulting in my
spending an entire Saturday sitting on my fat ass waiting for your
technician to arrive. When he did not arrive, I spent a further 57
minutes listening to your infuriating hold music, and the even more
annoying Dominican robot woman telling me to look at your helpful
website.... HOW? I alleviated the boredom by playing with my testicles
for a few minutes - an activity at which you are no-doubt both
familiar and highly adept.
The rescheduled installation then took place some two weeks later,
although the technician did forget to bring a number of vital tools -
such as a drill-bit, and his cerebrum. Two weeks later, my hi-speed
modem had still not arrived. After 15 telephone calls over 4 weeks my
modem arrived... six weeks after I had requested it, and begun to pay
for it.
I am still waiting for my internet speed to come even close to what
I'm paying for. I have made 9 calls on my mobile to your no-help line,
and have been unhelpfully transferred to a variety of disinterested
individuals, who are it seems also highly skilled ball jugglers. I
have been informed that a technician is available (and someone will
call me back); that I will be transferred to someone who knows whether
or not a technician is available (and then been cut off); that I will
be transferred to someone (and then been redirected to an answer
machine informing me that your office is closed); that I will be
transferred to someone and then been redirected to that irritating
robot woman...and several other variations on this theme.
Doubtless you are no-longer reading this letter, as you have at least
a thousand other dissatisfied customers to ignore, and also another
one of those crucially important testicle- moments to attend to.
Frankly I don't care, it's far more satisfying as a customer to voice
my frustrations in print than to shout them at your unending hold
music. Forgive me, therefore, if I continue.
I thought Tricom were shyte, that they had attained the holy pizz-pot
of god-awful customer relations, that no one, anywhere, ever, could be
more disinterested, less helpful or more obstructive to delivering
service to their customers. That's why I chose Codetel, and because,
well, there isn't anyone else is there? How surprised I therefore was,
when I discovered to my considerable dissatisfaction and
disappointment what a useless shower of bastards you truly are. You
are sputum-filled pieces of distended rectum - incompetents of the
highest order.
Tricom - wankers though they are - shine like brilliant beacons of
success, in the filthy puss-filled mire of your seemingly limitless
inadequacy. Suffice to say that I have now given up on my futile and
foolhardy quest to receive any kind of service from you. I suggest
that you cease any potential future attempts to extort payment from me
for the services which you have so pointedly and catastrophically
failed to deliver - any such activity will be greeted initially with
hilarity and disbelief - quickly be replaced by derision, and even
perhaps bemused rage.
I enclose two small deposits, selected with great care from my cats
litter tray, as an expression of my utter and complete contempt for
both you and your pointless company. I sincerely hope that they have
not become desiccated during transit - they were satisfyingly moist at
the time of posting, and I would feel considerable disappointment if
you did not experience both their rich aroma and delicate texture.
Consider them the very embodiment of my feelings towards Codetel, and
its worthless employees.
Have a nice day - may it be the last in your miserable short life, you
irritatingly incompetent and infuriatingly unhelpful bunch of twats.

Sincerely, ____________

WE do not have the same Problem here in San Juan even thou Slim!!! owns 90% of PRT/Claro original Verizonwireless it was a condition before approval of sale by the FCC in Washington that America Movil will invest 200 Million dollars in Upgrades of Current lines in which the company announce the will double there investment in 4 years. In Puerto rico amost 98% of the Interconective lines are Fiberoptics!!!!! Since 1992 PRT own back then by the commonwealth of Puerto rico has invested heavily in making Puerto rico the most advanced in telecommunications in latin america. Just to let you know Norma DSL here is 5 MB wireline and Claro wireless broadband is up to 3 MB and Centennial is up to 4 MB and Broadband Onelink Cable company 5 -10 MB and this is Residential you could switch to business plans like centennial up to 18 MB. One thing for sure is that PRT has a Partnership with Canadian Nortel for almost 10 years most systems from PRT are Nortel and Lucent the best in the Markets. Intenet service in the D.R in reliability and speeds are non comparable to Puerto Rico or some other countries in the area like Panama, Cayman Islands, U.S-Brittish virgin Islands are way ahead of service in the D.R they always tell me that the D.R has the best communication in Latin America that is not true. Argentina, Mexico, Chile and Neighboring Puerto Rico they are way more advanced!!!!

What we have here in the Dr is severly lacking in my opinion nad has gotten horribly worse since this Slim guy took over. The only reason for these problems in the fact that monopolies are allowed her in the DR. The companies on top know they don't have to be accountable, so why even bother, where are the clients going to go.

I remember a thread a while back about how Carlos Slim was such a good businessman along with some notable Dominicans, as if they were something special. Give me a break! Any numnut given an exclusive market will make money, as the clientele have nowhere else to go!

That is the way Carlos Slim like it....

“Mr. Slim is very intelligent, very ambitious, and he likes to be the only one in the market,” says Gustavo de la Garza, chairman of Marcatel, a long-distance carrier that ran into a brick wall when it entered the Mexican market in 1996.
Carlos Slim’s Pickings

Mr. Slim's strategy has been consistent over his long career: Buy companies on the cheap, whip them into shape, and ruthlessly drive competitors out of business. After Mr. Slim got control of Telmex in 1990, he quickly cornered the market for copper cables used by Telmex for telephone wires. He bought one of the two main suppliers and made sure Telmex didn't buy any cable from the other big supplier, eventually prompting the owners to sell the company to him. Update:

I have been having problems as of late like most but today it has been real bad, up to 2 min. to connect even to Yahoo and my speed is 1.5M down and 700up. So I called Codetel and reported the problem and they said they would have someone ther in 24 hours. Anyway a technician calls me about 15 minutes later to ask me if the internet was better, and sure enough it was. It turns out that their equipment there was having a problem assigning the IP to my modem. Once they fixed it my speed was up and running to where it needs to be. While I know a somewhat a lot about computers I don't really know a lot about internet connection issue but hopefully this info will help somebody else.

This is my take on the matter.
We were having the exact same problem as you at the very same time.
I've seen this happen before.
Yahoo messenger not wanting to sign in, and when signed in, going offline for a short while then coming back, as well as difficulty getting into Yahoo mail.
Someone somewhere eventually fixed the problem, and when the techie phoned you, he made you feel like he attended to your particular account's problem, while the truth is that everybody was suffering the same inconvenience.

Chat log at 3:08 PM today between myself and a buddy.

Quote:
****: how's your internet?
Marco: don't know
Marco: just getting on
Marco: been fixing a puter
Marco: urs bad?
****: won't load yahoo mail
****: constant refreshing
Marco: I had troubler getting yahoo messengert to open
Marco: will check the mail now
Marco: won't open
****: k, thanks
Marco: 2nd try
Marco: nope
Marco: nada
Marco: wait
Marco: I went in by a different route and got in
Marco: by my yahoo mail shortcut
Marco: is that how u were going in?
****: tried it several different ways
Marco: just got in now
Marco: maybe u should try again
If we were having the same problem in Sosua that you had in Moca, it must have been at the national level.
