It says that this is also a forum for newcomers, and many of you encourage newcomers to get as much information as possible before they move. Well, isn't asking questions on this forum exactly what they should be doing then? No one is looking for your encouragement, just your advice. And if you don't want new people to move there, why have a forum? Most of us asking questions here ARE going to move, do we have to wait until then to get answers from you? I'm not saying that none of you answers, but as chola1978 said "...some of us do not like more outsides here, some of us love the idea of sharing our paradise...and some will not give an opinion."

Well said . . . .

Thank you both for your respond.
quote from chola 1978
"...well your goingto have a hard time in dr1 cuz some of us do not like more outsides here, some of us love the idea of sharing our paradise...and some will not give an opinion."
Thats natural and thats no problem. I realise that this forum is for expats allready living in DR and that you refer "newcommers" by people who resently moved there.
I´m trying to reach out for those who "love the idea of sharing" Not because I need others to encourage me, but because I would like to get some info or some insight. Yet, it´s nice to be embraced and welcomed but if that happends it´s a bonus
Second quote from Chola1978
"I would suggest if your planing on coming to DR on a low budget or high, make sure that dr lifestyle is what you want,,, be like nike..just do it..."
Well, I will never know if this is a lifestyle that I want until I´m there and until I´m there I try to get som info and advices from people allready living there. This might not be the right forum but it´s the only forum there is in a language I can understand.
Third quote from Chola1978
"but please learn from others mistake"
Japp, thats exactly the idea why I´m in here
And yes El Tigre. we will go down and rent first and even before that we will just visit for a couple of times.
Respectfully
Carina

"Could I ask Mason3000 how much experience you have of living as an expat in the DR?
5 years in the DR, and 12 years in Venezuela, Panama, Costa Rica and Curacao.

I agree the DR isn't for everyone and yes I've seen many a horror story here and in other countries. Many flame out on dope, hookers, booze, go broke or simply can't adapt and head back (thank god, where else would I buy my appliances, furniture, cars, etc. lol).
It's my experience that 6 months is a good yardstick. If a person hacks it for 6 months they've got a good chance to make it long term.
Like anywhere you move you rent first and get the lay of the land before buying.

You build an extraordinary life by doing what others are afraid to do, or have failed at.

OK I understand, you need more furniture...................... I jest, I jest.
But here's where I'm not jesting: as one half of a couple who frequently get called in to help when some new folks are having a 'horror story', I personally would prefer that people who moved here had done their homework, done all the things that are advised over & over again & made a considered decision. I don't want people to come here & be unhappy. I would much rather they lived here happily because that way they will very quickly address themselves to helping the needs of those less fortunate than themselves. Those who move here ill-prepared are likely to have a problem, sooner or later. The DR is no longer the 'easy to move to' place it was 16 years ago - crime has increased, scams (for those who get drawn into them) have become more sophisticated, the cost of living has increased. You have to be prepared & you have to be street smart.

But............your experience when you asked a question was that Chirimoya answered it very quickly. You even thanked her for so doing. So perhaps you are responding to other people's experience, rather than what happened to you?
There are many here on DR1 who put a lot of time into answering people's questions, either on a thread or via PMs. If there are new posters who are finding it difficult to get answers, maybe, just maybe, it's a question which has been answered before and a search of the board will elicit those previous answers?

See, and look where he ended up.
Nice island, though he missed India by, oh, about 10k miles.

Exactly, as I wrote, that is my experience from looking around the forum. That it is hard to get questions and that many times the answers are sarcastic. This is my experience, and I have noticed that alot of other posters feel the same way. And I did write that this didn't apply to all of you, but that it happens alot here. Ive seen threads where people are making fun of the poster or just fighting their way through it.

i don't know that this is the place to be bashing other DR1ers. Everyone is entitled to their opinions - and those who have been here longer know that it's hard to be here and not have steady income, support system, etc... A lot of people like to dive right in - head first - without any idea of what they're in for. I think the more experienced ex-pats are more trying to avoid THAT than tell people "no, don't do it, ever."
seriously though. if you're serious about moving here. make a short term plan. 6 months (9 if you've got kids, so they don't have to leave school is things don't work) and at the end of that time re-evaluate. Do you like it? can you handle it? and if you do, move all your stuff from the states and set up shop. Why not? but i think that testing period is pivotal.
