Where you do need to be mini-Diddy on the island, Johnny Numbers, is in having access to back up finances for emergencies. I can't emphasise this enough. Even though you're young & presumably healthy all sorts of emergencies happen here, RD$10,000 per month won't give you back up funds so you need another pot somewhere for peace of mind, only to draw on for emergencies. If you don't have it, you'll start worrying & that could make you prone to accidents etc. Good luck in your endeavours!

I'm coming on a one year guaranteed contract and $10,000 DOP a month is a number that I'm throwing out there, I could afford to do more if need be. As for accidents, this figure is after insurance and I have back-up funds for an emergency as well. Thank you for the concerns but I realize that I'm good for now.

hi Jason,
welcome to the DR1 bord.
if i understand it right you and the girlfriend could save enought to purchase your 2 roundtrip tickets and then the cashier would be empty.
arriving in a foreign country with empty pockets i would not name a good idea.
sure there are people outtha travelling that way, but it has a bunch of dangers and hassles waiting.
you would need a place to live, you need to purchase food, i hope you don't plan to move without a med insurance for emergencies.
to find a job is always possible,
but sometimes it takes some time to get one, and til then there is a room needed and food and some pocket money to travel around and get a job.
the lowest budget i would recommend to check out the Isle would be:
* roundtrip airfare paid
* money for 6 months of rent/electricity/food/transportation costs in case no job will be found earlier
* never leave your homecountry without a med insurance valid for the destin country and prepaid for the time period you plan to stay.
* a low budget visitor will most likely not have plans to do residency or such, so plan on the cheap but existent costs for renewing your visitor's visa every couple months. don't plan on a stay on illegal immigrations status, even simple lil happenings in life can get very bad when on an illegal immigrations status at the moment simple stuff appears.
if you are completely new to the destin plan also on a week or such on costs for a small hotel/motel while you are looking for a rented room.
don't forget that most rentals require a 2-3 months deposit plus the first month prepaid.
that would be my personal minimum savings recommendations to visit on 'lowest' budget.
anything below i name irresponsible.
happy travels
Mike

HI am new here and am from Chicago..I speak great spanish too and want to move to THE Dr on about 850 more or less or near 900 a month..This would be end of the year and try to escape the Chicago Winters for a good 4 to 6 months a year.
I am thinking Santo Domingo or Santiago. I have already pegged a few long term small room places in the gazcue area for about 240 to 380 a month more or less.
I am tempted for Santiago too and If i can find a cheapie in Santiago for like under 200 or just 200 a month I am in.
I hope I can get good tips on how to live lower middle class here and only party end of the weekend saturdays preferlaby and eat The typical more Dominican food and not spend more then 10 a day on food,Hope I get replies on this soon,,

You are very smart and mature, Rockero.
Every one should think these low numbers and keep prices down as much as possible and not let business owners to drive them skyrocket high for greedy mega profits.
Congrats on being a smart consumer and god luck from the whole heart!!
