If she doesn't see this thread, you could PM mountainannie. She gets virtually uninterrupted electricity in Gazcue.

Gazcue is pretty safe although I don't go out and about that much at night. We are well serviced by publicos and it is a tourist area so perhaps that makes it a bit safer since we have a few hotels. But we have everything here... a little super market and good services. You can walk to the Zona in about 10 minutes from here. And there is the English library as well. But it is a little calmer than the Zona with not so many bars and stuff so it is calmer at night. I think it is great place to live, does not depend on having a car and usually has good electricity. The Malecon is there, of course, but it is hard to cross during the day. Santiago is a different city, smaller and more laid back.... those who live there love it.

rockero, my aunt rents a 3 bedroom house there for about USD$277/RD$10,000/month. a pension will be much less! you have to look in the local papers to get the local deals. online you will only get the gringo prices lol but its definitely possible. no doubt about it. cannot be of more help because i dont currently live there, but i am sure you would find something cheap and decent within days if you went to SD!

Whew... Sorry Lou, waaay off. I humbly submit that apartment hunting can easily take weeks. There are some really lousy apartments out there with ridiculous pricing.
Apartment shopping here is one of the biggest pains in the butt I have ever experienced. And when you're running around the city, stuck in traffic jams all day, it can get pretty frustrating.
If you don't have a set budget, it's a LITTLE easier, since you won't mind paying a thousand a month for an apartment that's worth half that, but if you're looking for something good and cheap........ well, lets just say you may as well get in line with the hundreds of others that are looking for the same apartment.

lol JD, i do not doubt your experience! i can only speak from what i know. and i know a couple dozen folks who went there for college and found residential rentals easily---from rooms to apartments and houses. cannot say if perhaps its because they were students or looking in certain areas or what. but i can only guess some have an easier time than others.
i believe it may be because they already knew people there and had connections and inside info on rentals. that always helps!

that's right.
you ahve a aunt which rents,
so that aunt knows others who rent,
she will also know about somebody nearby in need of money who may rent cheap if a deposit is made cash right away aso aso aso.
that's the way it works always, in all different areas, not different here on the east than down there in the Capital.
and due to the bigger size of the Capital it sure is easier to get into something cheap there.
but for that the right connections are needed.
a new person has to pick a 'hood and rent there for the at the moment of arrival available rents, go around in the 'hood, speak to people, make friends and with time the best deals nearby will be found automatically.
i guess a newby with lil to nothing spanish will have firstly a bit a hard time to find the real cheap deals without a connection/friend/family member in the target community.
