You guys must all be rich and living very high class lives, I myself could not survive in the dr on $1500 a month, but a single person could live very decent in santiago on this amount. We are not talking about being a tourist and drinking every night and paying for girls..You can easily get a apartment for $300 a month in a safe area.

that's a tough one, because there is a huge variety in case of qualities of furnitures, like everywhere.
you can buy a double bed for $300.- and you can buy a nice one for $1000.-
to stuff the interior of a house/condo is always the expensive part of the purchase.

He said he is coming with $1500 in his pocket, not living on $1500 per month.

so do the math how long the 1500 bucks brought in will last.
for a newby most likely not even to pay the rent for the 2nd month, not counting that the 300 bucks per month appartments may require a deposit, too, so the 1500 would be down to 900 before the first drink/chic/meal been purchased or a gas tank in the kittchen been filled for some low budget homecooking.
1500 is what i consider decent per person to have handy when goin on a 1 or 2 weeks vacation out of the country, it's a joke to even consider to move to a foreign country with just that pocket money and nothing else.
that's why the numerous embassies around never have time for the important stuff, they are always filled with the movers who wanna go home.

$900---- what portion goes to rent?
If you are moving in with a Dominicana or her family,,, or are only paying $300 a month or less... you can scrape by...
You make it. You don't travel. You don't have a cushion.
If you are a Brit or Canadian, and can fly home for any big health crisis....
Otherwise, you are just doing a good job at adapting down to the Dominican style of life. Which most expats are not going to do.

I have a friend who is living here on 250 a month. Stays in the house of another friend, and most of his drinks are bought for him. I buy him some too.
But I look at him as having a spell of bad luck at the moment. It's a lifestyle I wouldn't wish on anyone.
I have to be able to pay my own way.
Can you do it on 900 a month? No doubt.
Do you think you were put on this earth to live that sort of lifestyle? I hope not.

Hi, I am new to this forum, I have been reading DR1 for some time, Back to 1992 I used to live for $150/m at Jarabacoa, and later $400 at Santiago, having a car that I roll 20k km per year, paying pucmm, and so on, I know because that's all money that my mother sent to me, so, it's possible living for less in DR, as long as you know where to spend, just like any place in this planet.
