Oh, and about learning enough from these boards.. No, I dont think we can, BUT we cant get a good head start.. Network and make a few contacts.... Get an idea where to best place to live, shop, etc etc is.... Not all of us are coming directly fromn the 1st world... some of us do have experience in the 3rd world or 2nd (open to debate) so its not going to be as big of a culture shcok and strugle as it would be a fresh gringo straight from USA....

Forgive me for emboldening part of your post, but that I think is the key. A conscious choice. We chose to live off Dominican salaries years ago when we first arrived and it wasn't easy. But definitely as you say rewarding and educational.
There's only one part of your post I would disagree with

I don't actually think 'anyone' can, having seen quite a few over the years who tried and failed. I think it takes a certain outlook on life, a level of determination and a certain optimistic, independent, survivor type of personality. And that isn't everyone! I only wish it was & then I wouldn't have any reservations about advising people to move here...........

If you don't care about:
- air conditioning
- backup electricity
- backup water
- having a car
- internet in your house
You can easily live on less than $1000/month. But, you won't have money for emergencies, as gringo says. My personal minimum is around $2000-$2500/month.

I agree that EnclineDesigns post is great and address' a lot.
However? I assume that you have assets that you could draw upon if needed or desired. That you have the means to go beyond your budget and fix or replace the frig., batteries, computer, vehicle or even be on the next flight out of the D.R.
Makes a big difference IF all you have comes in a monthly check and there is nothing else except to wait for next months check.
I believe that some people (expats) could and do live under $1K per month. But it is not for everyone and not everyone could do it.
Respectfully, Ringo

Hey T.
I don't think that this tread is aimed at you as an individual. I believe that this is a thread with some trying to give some information to the public in general. Read the Original Post by Chris.
(Sorry, not all about you. lol)
Regards, Ringo

I don''t assume that you know about me...as a matter of fact, I KNOW that you don't... but your response was addressed to/re low budgeters of which I am one, therefore I was rightfully thoroughly offended.
You made my day EnclineDesigns, sounds like you are living exactly what you want and had planned for... I only hope to be so lucky.

Back on topic. One person can live on $500 while another needs $2500 per month. We all have different needs and priorities in life. What's a necessity for one could be luxury to another. One lives on $3000 and cannot see another person living on less than that. That being said planning is still very important, but if you are a person used to living moderately, you can make it in the DR and again with some back up plan and some dinero in the bank.
