Any car shipping company has a customs broker`s contact information.
Good luck!

Thank you for the good luck but I have no intention of doing this whatsoever - very happy with the vehicle I already have, thanks. OK so the broker costs $300-$500. What my earlier post was asking was the range of taxes people were paying (somewhat more than the broker's fee, I would have thought). I thought if we could get people who have done this to post the taxes they paid, then others would have a yardstick by which to measure whether to import or whether to buy here. I don't need this information personally, since I won't ever be doing it. It was to help others make a judgement.

That is why you need a pro - customs broker. He tells you the exact amount of customs fee in advance. And from there you will decide what to buy and weather to buy or not at all.
The figure varies alot depending on the vehicle - make, model, year, engine size, mileage and book value.
There is a special schedule. It is not secret and anyone may request it from the customs. I used to have the link to the schedule of fees but lost as did not ship cars to DR last two years. Before that shipped 11 or 12 cars . No prob. One car was two years older than five years and owner had to pay a bribe $2500 to let it in the country.
So it is doable. It depends on a particular person. Who prefers what. Different stroke.

Not good enough, I'm afraid. I don't believe fees 'in advance'. I would like people to post here what they actually paid in taxes (after they've paid them ) for which make and model. Not the link to the special customs schedule either. What people actually paid. Anyone who has lived here a while will understand why.
This suspicious old codger always prefers to hear people's actual experiences rather than what they were told they would pay. Let's see if anyone is prepared to share this.

Costs just as recently as November 2008
An American from our complexe shipped a $30,000. Toyota truck from the USA in November 2008 to DR, he told me it was the worst decision he ever made as the car's total cost is now $48,000. This includes shipping and all taxes. I will try a get more info and post when I see him. He said that he would have paid approximately the same had he bought it here.

Thanks suzannel, make, model, year, how much was shipping & how much was taxes would be great info for those trying to make a judgement which way to go - buy here or bring in.
If your neighbour's total was US$18,000 then the US$15,000 I quoted from a case of 4 years ago isn't looking so off the wall.

Thanks suzannel, for posting actual numbers!
What are the odds of Milli Vanilli posting the same coherent information on this thread?

We just had a DR1'er recently import his suv along with the rest of his other stuff and it doesn't appear that there was a big difference in the cost. However, it was a royal pain in the arse and required a lot of negotiations so I don't know if he would do it again like that.
For those who are interested, check out the link to calculate the import duty fees.
