Default I've Tried and tried....

I've tried and tried to get some prices for various things, if a couple of people from inside Dom Rep, could help me and write me a "current" price list of the following i would be very appreciative:

Current prices of livestock and cattle, ranging from chickens to bullocks.

Various building materials, cement, gravel, wood, tin, iron etc.

and manure, or good decent soil.

Doesnt matter about price influx etc, just the current prices would be nice, if someone could do me a write up in RDP that would be great.

I just need inside info,

Thankyou.

let me be very direct. This follows my commentary on folks asking how to get married in DR:

I MAY be nobody OR I may know exactly what I'm talking about here. Regardless of that, I will tell you this: there could not be a worse time for this type of investment. Your lack of basic market info, as well as open-ended non-specific questions re livestock, pricing, supplier info, demographic, sociology economic factors, etc parameters, tells me you are biting off much more than you can chew.

I will tell you that a pure Holstein costs me anywhere between 50 and 55K pesos. But this tells you nothing, actually.

Unless you want all this as a personal use investment and "live off the land" in which case tells me things must be beyond bad where you are with your present situation.

Save yourself a lifetime of heartache.

It seems a shame to me to that the OP is getting 'shot down in flames' for asking his questions. From previous posts and conversations, he wants to pursue a "dream" but is realistic enough to appreciate that it may not happen for some years and initially he just needs to get some guidelines to be able to plan for his dream to come true. He seems to have age and enthusiasm on his side and, yes, I can appreciate that things are beyond bad where he is currently.

To rilen: we do actually supply the 'tierra negra' which is top quality well-rotted cow manure which is ideal for growing.

You can buy a "run of the mill" campo calf for about 5000 - 6000 pesos. I recently bought a pregnant horse for 5000 pesos. Two for one. Neither the calves or horses at this price are "prize" animals, but you can find them.

In the past I also bought ~100 barbados black belly lambs for 1100 USD.
And 100 goats for 1200 USD.

Don't expect these prices to find you. You need to search for them.

As for manure, I think it depends on what it is used for. I used to buy chicken excrement (I think that was what it was) pronounced... gee je naso.
I can't recall the cost, but it wasn't cheap.

Sorry I can't help you out with costs of building supplies, but I do have a house for rent on a disfunctional farm with 8000 "dead and gone" plaintain trees, 25 acres of "never had a chance" yucca, the bones and wandering souls of 100 dead goats/ 100 dead lambs..... oh and a well cared for, underpriced mare and her foal.

For now, I realize it is close to impossible to scrape a thin dime out of this property, so I just enjoy watching my horses eat grass and run around free. They would surely otherwise be pulling a veggie cart with styrofoam blinders stapled to thier eyes.

I tend to lean towards "El Rey" and his curt analysis and advice on the situation, which is ............ DON'T DO IT !!!

Please let's keep this thread on track. I had to delete some posts and would ask that future contributions just contain the information the OP is asking for.

Note that he is not asking for advice, just information.

ok then, just pure facts, someone who knows more exact numbers please correct me, those are average prices.

livestock prices depend on age, breed and purpose of an animal but:
normal live cow is about 50 pesos per kilo.
live pig depends on size, can be also sold per kilo but will average 3-4k pesos per animal (i presume an adult).
live chicken is about 80 pesos (adult).

bag of cement is about 240 pesos. more for white cement for tiles.
block of cement depends on a size, around 18 pesos.
iron for construction is about 1500 pesos for 50kg.
gravel is about 900 pesos per sq meter.

total cost of construction will depend on quality materials used, size of the house etc. i think we have a thread about building a house inexpensive "dominican" way but it will be hard for a gringo who has little DR experience. i would suggest to buy a land with a house and just make alteration. day of work for a construction worker is about 350 pesos.

best of luck, rilen. your chances of success are small but it is your life and your choices. if you are wise, careful and optimistic you may be able to make this dream come true. in my opinion you will be lucky if you break even and make enough to live on but getting profits may be hard.

I'm no farmer, and have no intention of doing that, but first of all, all the luck with your project...

however, we do have some similarities... we are dogtrainers, and breeders, and therefore we were in need of a house somewhat away from other houses... and this has serious implications...

car... count on having to buy a 4-wheel, and these are extremely expensive here
internet... check whether internet is available, and if it is, it will prob be banda ancha, which is ridiculously expensive for the service you get
watersupply... if you do not have a well, and have to have it brought in... expensive
herding dog... very reasonably priced and as it happens we can supply it... whahahaha.... (Australian shepherds)

The last line was just meant as a joke, but the lines before can take a serious bite out of your budget...

Small amount of data you can file away;

Re-bar. Sold by the quintal (100 lbs) and in 22.26 qq bundles called "atados".
Quintals (qq) are around RD$1450 now and "atados" are somewhere between RD$25,000 and RD$29,000.

Cement is down a little, too, and can be had for less than RD$245...in Santo Domingo.
