As I will be in SD for 1-2 weeks, could someone perhaps direct me to a good eatery near SD Melia Hotel, (Dress slacks & Shirt - no jeans) a nice music lounge catering to Latin Music & or Karaoke, and last, a good place to exchange dollars. I would prefer a lounge catering to the 35 and above crowd if possible.

You will find everything from "Street Vendors" to highend eaterys.You can dance at the Discos in most of the hotels.Meregue Bar in the Casino Lobby of the Hotel Jaragua is nice.The Disco next door is also good.Wed. night is ladies night! Nothing starts till midnight here,except the Merengue bar.Lots of Hookers in the back of the bar,and walking around all the casinos! Not that that would interest you???????? CCCCCCCCC THe Vesuvio is at the other end of the Malecon.Good Italian and Seafood.A Santo Domingo tradition for over 50 years.They also have a "Pizzaria" next to the restaurant.
Taxi drivers at the Hotels are leeches,who wait all night to "Screw" one tourist rather than work at a fair fare!!!!Stay away from them.Call a taxi,or flag something off the street.Agree to a price before taking a ride.That goes for the Hookers too.Lots of nice "Massage Parlors" in that district,again,not that you would be interested??????

Criss, thank you for your help. I am not sure what you mean on the other ????????? , as I usually do not have trouble connecting with the opposite sex on a no-pay basis. I am more interested in good food & having some fun. Can you tell me how far the Hotel Jaragua (and what is the age?)is to the Hotel SD Melia & if in fact if there is karaoke in SD. (It can be in Spanish, that would be nice)
Also what is the Malecon, as it sounds like it is has a begining & and end.

The Juragua is right next door to the Melia. Leave your hotel and walk one building to the right. Champions sports bar at the juragua has karaoke once or twice a week. Sorry but I don't remember which night.

The Napoiltana has a nice quiet lounge on the second floor. Usially a lounge type act with keyboards and vocals. Sort of cheesey but not a bad place for a drink or two. Napolitano also has a Disco that has been OK lately.

For eating, it depends what you are in the mood for. Italian, Vesuvio has good food. Bricciola in the zona colonial has good food and great ambience.

For steaks, David Crocketts. I also like the new Brazilian Rodizio in plaza de espana in the colonial zone. Not even in the same league as a Rodizio in Sao Paulo but decent and a great location in front of Alcazar De Colon etc.

Meson De La Cava has Ok food but eating inside a natural cave can be cool. . . .once.

If you start missing US style grub, there is always Outback, Tony Romas and Fridays!!
