Santo Domingo - Gay Capital of The Caribbean?
I went down to the Malecon last night at around 11pm to see what was going on and watch the midnight fireworks. It was fun, lots of people, beer, rum and music
But...
I was a little surprised at the amount of gay guys (groups) dancing and having fun. The people (Dominican/Gringos) I was with also seemed a little surprised.
One thing is for sure, they know how to party and attract lots of attention!
As a heterosexual male, I'm happy to see an increase in alternative lifestyle males. It can only be good for my single life future and the availability of beautiful Dominican females

Robert, don't count your blessings, maybe you personally will enjoy the situation, but in a generation or two 'the availability of beautiful Dominican women' will dwindle, as an increase in homosexuals will signify a reduction of total births, and this means less overall women available for your descendants. Traditionally, societies have frowned upon the promotion of homosexuality in order to not to find themselves with a negative population growth down the line.

prosperous future ahead for SD ??
According to one of the latest economy/sociology gurus from the U.S. (can't remember his name) a city's acceptance of and openness to creativity, innovation and new technologies is measured by the amount of non-conformist people living in it (gays, artists, etc).
SD should be on the right track then ....

If this was the case Mirador....i would think cultures would actualy be trying to actively promote homosexuality to ease global overpopulation. But your theory is nonsence. I live in NYC...where there is a large openly gay community (1mil?) and there seems to be no dip in the population (hetero or homo) here or elsewhere where gays are accepted.
There are a lot of reasons why gay and lesbians have been discriminated against....but this theory is rediculous. If it WERE true tho...perhaps would be natures attempt at population control...and therefore a natural phenomenon.
None-the-less....i am sure that even IF there is an emergence of gay culture in santo domingo...i am sure there will be no shortage of dominican women.....EVER.
(still shaking my head here)

I hope so.
I lived in Sydney (Australia) for almost 7 years, a wonderful city with a VERY large gay population.

Australia, along with other countries (mostly European) who have promoted (i.e., not discouraged) homosexuality, are experiencing a severe decline in birth rates, so much that in order to maintain their work force level, they've had to resort to immigration. As a matter of fact, without immigration, these countries would have negative population growth. Now, what would it do for local tourism if upon arrival to the Dominican Republic, visitors would find that most hotel employees are Moroccans, Filipinos, or Indians, and Chinese Sankies to boot?

hmmm...but these are DEVELOPED 1st world countries that you meantion...the majority that is no longer under the thumb of the catholic church and its archaic views on birth control.
Sooooooooo..perhaps it is the fact that people in developed countries are planning responsibly when creating family...rather than reprodicng like bunny rabits?
Going back to your original post...sure perhaps durring the cave-age it was important to keep multiplying to keep a tribe or race going....that hardly can be argued in this day and age.
And as far as an influx of immigrants....well..that happens anywhere when there is a chance for opportunity that isnt available in ones own country (hence the wave of haitans to the DR...and Domincans to the US)...and they usualy are doing the jobs that the local population are not interested in doing. Even if, by some some far fetched chance, there WAS a population dip in the DR....i think there will always be pleanty of local dominican to staff the hotels and even the role of sankie.
Actualy, ...in most developed countrys where gays & lesbians have rights...there is a gay family baby boom going on. Gay families are becoming more common and more accepted. (and YES the majority of the kids come out straight..most likely a 90% - 10% ratio like the rest of the population). The one thing that these kids have going that too many kids from tradition families do not...is that they are PLANNED for and well provided for. (No offence to my hetero friends here...but you know what i am talking about...there simply ARE no "suprise packages" for the gay family...no "oops we gotta got married cuz we are pregnant" marriages...which generaly ends up in divorce). But i guess you are more concerned about overpopulating the earth, rather than promoting happy and healthy families...including "alternative families".
I would like to see any offical data and statistics that you can refer me too to back up your outlandish claims.
I have heard of many reasons to discriminate against gays & lesbians.....but actual fear of population decimation is totaly rediculous.
And...what is the harm of negative population growth????? (the earth could use a break!) Perhaps you should email China with this theory and they can promote homosexuality rather than having a one child per family policy....but OOPS...china already HAS a large gay culture)
Oh...i should also meantion i am raising a healthy (and seemingly straight) 12 year old son.
(sorry anna...i am trying to keep this sorta DR related....this one just has me banging my head against the wall tho....i just have never heard such ignorance in my life)
