Soliciting guidance
I would appreciate the help of others who are very familiar with the Dominican Republic. I am planning to visit the DR in the last week of January or early February. However, I am not sure where to visit. I am a black american male. My friends tell me I should visit Santo Domingo and Boca Chica, or Puerta Plata and Sosua. Also I would appreciate if you could provide me with some good hotels in the area that would allow me to bring guests back to my room.

Sure, First Pick a destination city, then ask about hotels that allow you to bring guests over. You are not helpfull when you name 4 different areas. Stick to one region Puerto Plata/ Susua or Santo Domingo/Boca Chica.

Thank you for your comment and advice. But that is part of my problem. I want to know which area I should visit. This is my first time in the DR and want advice on which area I should visit. Also since I am not familiar with the areas I wanted names of hotels. I want to make my plane reservations soon and also if I go to S. Domingo first what airlines in the DR fly between S. Domingo and Puerta Plata?

It sounds like you already have part of your itineary set. Everything really depends on your port of arrival and the amount of time you have to spend.
Santo Domingo is the city that I know the most about. If I were a first time visitor there, I would make reservations in one of the hotels in the Colonial Zone, on El Conde, close to all of the historical sites; Hotel El Palacio or the Mercure are examples. Public buses run regularly during the day between the city and Boca Chico, unless you want to indulge in a more expensive taxi. Boca Chico is really a day trip and doesn't have a nightlife to speak of.
My travel plan is generally to fly into the capitol, spend the weekend there partying, and then head North to one of the tranquil little towns on the North coast for as many days as I can, before returning to the capitol a day or two before departing the DR. You could travel to many of the citys and towns on the North coast very inexpensively on the Caribe Tours bus and see the countryside as you go. It's really a beautiful country.
As an African-American male myself, I was surprised that it was not the African part of my heritage that was of great concern to Dominicans as much as it was the fact that I was American. Americans, whether black or white, tend to be looked at in the same way: rich and arrogant. When you understand that the great majority of people in the DR are relatively poor, you understand how that perception can predominate. But let me hasten to add, every Dominican that I have come to know after traveling to the country for the past five years, has been warm and loving. Once you get over the image that you have limitless financial resources and that your mother has raised a fool that can be taken advantage of, you'll be fine. Again, just understand that to them you are the 'have' and they are the 'have not'. I hate to make generalizations, but that has been my experience.
If you have the time, visit both coasts. And don't miss the humpback whales that migrate to Samana every year at this time of the year to spawn and have thier offspring. It is an awesome experience! The beaches on the North coast are spectacular, but you won't want to miss the exciting nightlife and culture of Santo Domingo.
You are going to fall in love with the people of the Dominican Republic and you are giong to fall in love with thier country.
Enjoy!

Santo domingo is a big city, you have a bit of everything there, fine restaurants, fancy discos and some cultural activities. You need spanish to meet women there. There is no beach in santo domingo only ocean view.
Now Boca chica is a beach hooker town. You will find some of the ugliest hookers there who would want to charge you top dollar. I heard you can talk them down to fraction of the asking cost. Boca chica has beech and touristy restaurants and hotel which will allow you to bring in girls. Puerto plata is small beach town but it doesn't really have a nice beach. The closest tourist beach will be playa dorada, a nice touristy hotel complex. prices are crazy in bars and stores. there are hookers there too just like in any touristy locations around this island.
Now sosua has the best beach and also a huge number of ugly hookers. I am not sure which are more uglier, boca chica or sosua? But sosua has a bit of everything you need. hotels, restaurants, nice beach and lots of hookers. I recommend sosua if you are here for only a week.
have fun my friend.

Dynamic,
AZB provided you with a fairly good synopsis, and it may give you an idea of which area you want to visit. Your reference to wanting hotels that are guest friendly obviously gave away one of your objectives. You want to steer clear of the all-inclusive resorts, as that is a no-no there. As a new poster, unless you have been "lurking" here on dr1 for a while, I should offer you a translation of AZB-speak. Ugly=black. He didn't use his usual abbreviation UBHs (ugly black hookers), possibly in deferance to the fact that you identified yourself as a black man.
It is true there are ugly hookers in Boca Chica, Puerto Plata and Sosua, as well as Santo Domingo (and yes even Santiago AZB). It is also true there are attractive and sensual Dominican women in a variety of shades who will be glad to offer you their companionship (for the proper remuneration).
Either Sosua of Boca Chica offer a combination of beach, night life, plenty of "available" chicas and inexpensive hotels that will let you bring them home with you. Boca Chica has the advantage of being close to the capital. Also, you can generally get cheaper airfares from the US to SDQ than to POP. Sosua is closer to some of the other attractions on the north coast, including the whale watching excursions from Samana, which will be in season when you are there.
For that time of year, I would recommend Sosua, although if you are not a big fan of hanging out on the beach, you may want to consider Puerto Plata. It's a larger town, and a bit less touristy. If you have more than a few days, you should consider trying both. Fly into SDQ, spend a few days in Boca Chica, and visit Santo Domingo with it's historic sites. Then take the Caribe tours bus North to Sosua or Puerto Plata, and book an excursion to Samana to see the whales. You're gunna love it!
P.S. Do not expect the honeys to speak English, even in the tourist areas. If you don't speak Spanish, a little study to learn some basics will be time well spent.

There you go, it has to become a racial issue, always. You folks will just not get over the color issue even if the information is a well known fact. I will explain it again and again like I have done it several times before but some folks just can't get over the color "black" issue.
So for the brain dead dummies, I will make myself clear again.
It so happens sosua, puerto plata, cabarete and boca chica have some of the ugliest looking hookers in this island, if not in the world. They are low life sleazy hookers and it so happens (here is where racial police will get stuck) they are 99.99% blacks. Yes folks, even my african american visiting friends have made it quite clear that these girls are all ugly and this guy will soon figure this out for himself.
Now there are beautiful non-hookers and hookers black girls in other regions of this country but they don't really cater to tourists. These girls call themselves models and cater to only wealthy lawyers and business men (mostly dominicans). you need contacts to arrange a session with these quality hookers. They are not seen looking for business in cheap carwashes of north coast. These girls are expensive and they have fixed clients. They are seen in miss dominican republic contests and other beauty shows in this island. You will not see these girls on your short trip. So I hope you will understand what I am trying to say to you. I have 2 beautiful black girlfriends who would put many visiting blonds to shame anyday.
Have a nice trip my man.

Dynamic, i suggest you start from top to bottom. Either Start from Santo Domingo or Santiago, spend a few days looking around the sites, then hit the beach towns.

I would like to know more about what you would like to do while in the Dominican Republic?
I like urban surroundings, so I am always stomping around Santo Domingo. Which to me is like any other large city with trash, traffic, loud noises...etc. Others may prefer quiet private beach front locales for a bit a solitude.
After three days of latter, I would go completely insane!!

I would like to thank all of you for your suggestions. I am new to this forum but I do not take AZB's comment to be prejudicial. As always beauty is in the eyes of the beholder so to each their own. I appreciated the help. While I definitely cannot be considered bilinqual I do know some basic spanish and can understand some things if it is spoken slowly so one of my favorite terms is "puede hablar mas despacio".
While I am there I want to spend time at the beach, visit some of the tourist attractions and take part in the nightlife. Can you suggest any moderately priced hotels in Santo Domingo or Sousa/Puerta Plata?
