Gender Roles in DR?
Hi Everyone,
I was just wondering what the gender roles are typically like in the DR.
For us here in Canada, they are constantly changing, but there is a huge pull for equal rights where women are concerned. We are not seen as lesser than a man.....well for the most part I mean.....It's also normal for women to be working full time, even when kids are in the picture......and though I still hear jokes about it, women are not always expected to be in the kitchen cooking for their husbands, have dinner waiting on the table, we are not expected to have the house spick and span clean, nor are we expected to wait on our man hand and foot (like they are kings of the castles.....hahahahaa thats funny)
As I am a woman I want to know what I should expect when I arrive, in general.
If you could let me know that would be awesome!!
Thanks in Advance!

In DR, the women can work and make money and do what they want but many men seem to set the ground rule from the very beginning: thrusdays - saturday is for them. they go out alone with their buddies and come home late. Sunday they usually spend time with family. I, rarely, see a dominican man out with his wife on friday or saturday evenings. he will do it just to please her. Now if a western woman stops him from going out alone with his buddies, then she will soon be relieved of her duties as his wife.
now folks, I am talking about dominican men who have good jobs and make very good money, own a late model car and have money to spend. I am not talking about your poor resort worker domninican who worships a fat white skinned woman from north america. The dominicans i am refering to, usually never marry a north american lady. they are doing just fine with their own kind.

Wow thursday - Saturday.
that just sounds crazy, can his wife do the same thing?, I mean, I'm just wondering, she shouldn't be in the house while he's out, so I mean, let me know how that works. I mean, it sounds pretty pathetic but hey, cultures are all different, so let me know how it is for women, can they go out, or do they have to be in the house all "enchochada"

Bob - funny and agreed!!
Yea, sure .... she's usually in Nueva York shopping while he's here hanging with the guys. The Dominican guys who behave this way keep their wives (and their girlfriends and their girlfriends friends) VERY VERY happy ...
Stay well,
Amy
