98yrs old???? yikexxxxxx. I want to be like him when I grow up. God bless him.
the weather is cloudy as usual, we haven't seen the seriously hot summer days yet. Maybe I am getting used to this weather that I don't feel hot anymore? Who knows.
Lalla, lets make a deal, when you come to santiago next time, let me know and lets make a Dr1 santiago gathering right here in the ciudad corazon.
We can fight all day long but we do have one thing in common among us, we both love santiago.

Yeah, the old man is incredible, and he is exactly the same as I remember him as a child, thats the insanity. Same spunk, energy, still works his lands like nothing. And he always tells u (when we fight with him to sit and let the workers work for him) "Si me siento me muero"...he doesnt want to be idle. feels that the day he loses the love for working, he's ready to die.
DEAL!! But you all have to attend, i would love to meet all this gringos and miguelito as well!!
Maybe August.... we'll see

And to add more controversy: AZB is right with regards to meeting decent girls in the DR. And I want to be like him when I grow up.
amigomexicano, when in the DR, don't be loud, forget bachata and merengue, and act calm. And, please, please, DO NOT try to impress with your status as a 'American citizen or whatever, as some have suggested - it means nothing in some circles. You'll be alright, buddy.

so if one should not listen to bachata, merengue (or worse tipico) b/c it makes you "non-decent, non-classy, chopo/a" then what type of music should one listen to while in DR wanting to meet decent, educated, classy dominicans?? what type of music do well-off, decent, educated, classy, middle-to-upper level class dominicans listen to??
should it be alternative? pop? jazz? classical?

They listen to Spanish Rock, Pop and various American music. I assume they are well aware of the latest bachata and merengue songs, but the clubs that cater to them is more of an international flavor than local.

Well, El Diego...
As a bachatú extraordinaire, I can tell you that those who make a lot of noise are looked as pariguayos. Merengue, bachata, and típico are conducive to loud behavior.
Acting in a dignified fashion does not cost anything. So, I think amigomexicano will be fine.
And here are some pointers, amigo:
If in a public setting, DO NOT sing along to anything you hear, no matter how well you know the lyrics. You may gently tap your left foot, but on the 'off ' beat.
DO NOT clap your hands in order to attact the waiter's attention. Dom-Yorks and their Dominican counterparts do that.
It is no longer cool to brag about your taste in Salsa music, but most don't know it yet.
DO NOT speak English if you don't have to. Some Dominicans speak several languages, and will not be impressed.
DO NOT brag about anything - it is uncooth the world over.

Inconspicuously full of it

these are great advises. thnx.
i will sing aventura, anthony santos' songs in the shower.. and in public or in the streets i will talk about/listen to alejandro sanz, juanes, caifanes, mana to name a few.
one other tip is: don't buy gigantic bottles of black label, hennessy at airport duty free shops and show off inside plane or in dr.
and pls don't lie to people in dr about things in ny/usa. I know someone who told people over there that one time her plane went through some kind of "tunnel" while flying over the skies... can you believe that? Planes flying through tunnels. And dominicans also show off by shipping a lot of stuff to DR.

Okay, dude...
The joke is on me, but you fail to see the humor on my post.
Well, at any rate, DO NOT brag on DR1 about the places you have been to and the things that you have seen/done. There's one Dominican-York here, who, for the past three years, has compelled us to read his exploits. And the whining.

In the DR since you are latino and being Mexican, if you do get a gf, you can be sure it's because she likes you. Dominicanas who are gold diggers are searching for Anglo-Saxons like Robert, gringos, Italians. They won't go after you because of money. Mexicans in the DR are seen as broke ass hispanics who have nothing to offer. So don't worry about it.
