I want to dance!
Last year I visited the DR with my boyfriend (we're in our 20's) and we had a wonderful time. We went out of the resort to a local "carwash" type place because we love to party and when the rum is flowing and the music's loud I love to dance. BUT my fella doesn't. At home I go out with my girlfriends and we take to the floor while the guys sit around and drink, so this isn't a problem.
I didn't want to just ask a dominican guy I'd never met before to dance, but the girl serving our table was friendly so I explained my situation in broken Spanish to her. She'd shared a couple of drinks with us and was quite chatty, so I was surprised when she seemed embarrassed by my request. I was quite drunk and just assumed she was shy, dragging her up to the dance floor anyway. The poor girl was so mortified that I let her escape before the song was even finished.
I mentioned it to one of the reps in the hotel who explained that it just wasn't the done thing, women don't dance together here and she might even have thought I was a lesbian!
Is that true? Would a dominican guy assume I was coming on to him if I asked him to dance? What's a girl supposed to do?

Ask the guys or if you wait they will ask you but for the love of bachata don't ever ask another girl again. It's not done there.
Make eye contact with the guys they'll get the hint.

How about your boyfriend? Would he mind if you dance with other guys? I noticed guys somehow think it is inappropriate to dance with different people especially if you are there with a guy. And the guy you came with might not like it at all ... They will dance with you, that is for sure, but what they will think, who knows ...

I don't like injecting the heavenly powers into my expressions so I thought bachata was appropriate here.

wait I've seen this in the DR many many times, two girls dancing together. The purpose being that as soon as the men see them dancing they go right up to them and each one takes one girl. This is done all the time, since asking a guy to dance is not quite acceptable.

If a woman is at a table with just one man, most Dominican men will not ask her to dance. They will respect she is with one guy. If it is a group at a table, that is different. Try to catch a guy's eye and smile, normally that is all it takes to get asked to dance.
Be very careful asking a Dominican man to dance, that is usually interepreted as more then just an invitation to dance. NEver ask another woman to dance here, it is not done! However two women can dance with one guy...... that is okay!

You are correct you will see two Dominican women dance together but they know each other. A woman would never ask another woman she does not know to dance.....
