Nothing is impeding me. She would not have even talked to me before any way if I was interested since she knew I had been to the 'disco'.
My intent? Is to get to know her. As I mentioned above I was asking these questions out loud to guage my intent - is to avoid hurting her.

The deflowering thing kinda bugged me though - didn't really like that comment.

No love, no obsession - just thinking out loud as I have said. No hidden agenda. Yes through an interpretor - my very good friend and the pastor of the church - known him two years. In fact he would'nt have wanted me to talk to her if I was still going to the disco.

I don't know what the status of your Spanish ability is but I learned and studied French before I ever learned Spanish and I can tell you they are virtually identical similar in sentance structure and verb conjugations. They always say the second languge is a lot easier.

I would sincerely consider giving it a whack and buy a French grammar book and some tapes to get started. FYI in my own case I was 34 when I met my Dom. wife who spoke (nor still speaks) English and I was able to communicate with her on decent enough level from the very beginning.

You might teach her to use a computer and then you can start to communicate by email as most decent sized towns here in the DR have internet cafes where they charge between US$0.60 to 1.00 per hour.

Failing that you could buy her an inexpensive computer laptop for $200 and get an economical dial up internet access.

You seem like you are sure of what you want to happen, but maybe lack the confidence to push things a little bit further. Sounds a bit obvious but as Chip00 states, if you give French a shot, even if it's just the basics your lady might be flattered to know you are going to so much effort for her.

Also, I guess I'll be way out here, but I don't suppose you've just asked her whether she likes you and would be interested in a relationsip? Some women like to hear it straight as it shows them that you can be decisive and take the lead but you are also giving them a choice and asking them for their opinion, because at the end of the day it's her opion that matters most. Not this board, or the Pastor.
It could be that she isn't interested, which although might not be what you want to hear, will at least end your agony of not knowing and if you really care for her that last thing you would want is for her to feel awkward and responsible for hurting YOUR feelings which is possible if she is the object of an affection not returned.
I hope you give it a go though, it's a delicate situation but you sound as if you have enough sense to know how to handle things,

Its sad to see guys making a princess out of local cueros. Listen up guys, the girls you are confusing for soulmates are your local cueros who would sleep with any guy who is willing to take them to motels. They play hard to get with you foreigners but these same exact girls sleep with a barrio tigre in a NYC minute. Dominican guys take these girls in their dark tinted window cars to a cheap local darkly lit bar, have a few drinks and then take them to a local cabana for a quick session, then they simply dump them in the barrio where they had picked them up from in the first place. We, santiagueros, are ashamed to be seen with barrio chicas in public places, we usually take them to places where no one knows us, and then we take care of business and try not to be seen with her again.
Now I just don't see what is so appealing about these girls that you just can't stop thinking about them after the first easy fu#k. Is this the type of material that makes you jump off your seat to get in a plane and be with her again, not to mention marry her and have kids? How sad and pathetic. I think some of you guys hardly ever get laid in USA.

Geez AZB did you think it might be possible that there are still decent girls left on this island? Don't be so damn skeptical! Doesn't it tell you anything that this guy hasn't had relations yet? Not EVERY girl born on this island is looking to bed a gringo at all costs - give me a break. FYI there are many GOD fearing, DECENT people here on this island who raise there girls the right way. BTW, the guy who started this post seems like a decent God fearing person too and is going about getting to know this girl in a MORAL way - the same way in fact that I hope my children would go about it.

Now I didn't read the whole thread, but if the woman is decent and innocent in her character then you have to ask another question, what is in her that you like so much? now if I am from a middle class family, resaonably educated and have learned to have goals in my life to further myself economically and spiritually then I have to ask, why would I fall in love with some girl from a dirt poor background with zero education? You think I would like to drag someone like her with me? How would she talk to people who are educated in my circle of friends? How would she talk to my family and my neice and nephews and brothers and sister? I do have a family name to live with.
So please don't tell me about decent church going girls. tell me where she is coming from? Her education, the residential area where she grew up, her family etc etc etc. Eveyone has scored with a dirt poor girl in this country, I hope you have done better for yourself.
