Divorce

I have a post from the past that is very lengthy. I know many people have been through what I have been through with marrying a "Sanky". Does anyone know about the legalities of getting a divorce if you were married to a Dominican in the DR. He still lives in the DR somewhere!! I want him out of my life legally. Do I need to go to the DR for the divorce? Is there a different law if you haven't seen each other for a long time? Does anyone have these answers. I can't afford the trip to the DR as he spent my money, I'm in debt! Any info would be helpful.

You are in Canada right? Go to a Canadian lawyer, if you don't know where your Dominican husband is I'm sure they'll advice you on the best way to handle this. No need to travel to the DR.

Hi Anna, I really can't afford a lawyer due to the prediciment he has left me in with money. Do you have any other options???

We have legal aid for those that can't afford a lawyer. Look into it Legal Aid Ontario

Excellent advice Anna. You can get a do-it-yourself divorce package from the court here in NS but if you don't know where you ex is you have to prove that you did everything to try to find him in order to serve him with the papers. If you can prove that you tried everything, and he can't be located, then the proceding will go forward without him. You also have to have an original of your marriage certificate to get things started. Here in NS, the process cost about $275. Hope this helps.
