Hi there I'm looking for some advice.......

I'm considering the the above AI, has anyone been there?

I'm looking for info on the complex & any opinions on the facilities & surrounding area
Also any tips on the DM, this will be the 1st time I've travelled here

I would appreciate all responses

Try "Debbies Dominican Travel " at www.debbiesdominicantravel.com (oddly enough). Full of searchable resort reviews for those too chicken to visit a country for the first time and not stay behind walls and gates and armed guards.

Interestingly there are quite a few recent reviews - some say great and the others say not so great so you ought to be totally confused by the time you pore over them, but at least they are fresh.

As for coming to the Dominican Mepublic, you may want to try the abbreviation again.

Hey Larry,
There is nothing wrong with all-inclusives if the price is right. I got a great deal out of Toronto for the end of May, $529 plus tax, all inclusive for Casa Marina in Sosua. Hell flight alone is more than that. But do make sure you leave the resort and venture out, especially since this is your first time. That is the only way you will enjoy your trip. People that take the time to appreciate what the Dominican Republic has to offer, are those that keep going back. Those that sit by the pool all day and never bother to leave the "gates" are those that will probably complain about their resort.

As for Breezes, never stayed there. From what I understand you are close to Cabarete and Sosua, both great towns with so much to do, and safety is not a problem. You might also want to check www.tripadvisor.com. They also have recent reviews that may help you make your decision.

Was in Barbados last year & had a ball, so looking for something a little the same but different if you see what i mean ....

I do intend on seeing as much of the island as much as as poss.....any 'cant miss' activities for families?

Greetings from Atlantic Canada.

Breezes Puerto Plata (actually between Sosua and Cabarete) is a reasonably well booked AI resort which is popular with a slightly younger crowd. It has 24 hr. food and drink (local and international) and has all the normal activities and a few relatively unique ones (trapeze, "ice" rink and climbing wall e.g.). It has a Casino and a Disco. The pool is quite nice but the beach suffers from relatively high waves and is not as nice as nearby Playa Sosua.

The main pluses are:
1) Free shuttle 3X daily to Sosua and Cabarete.
2) Good drink selection
3) Upgraded common areas
4) Good selection of activities

The main minuses are:
1) No money spent upgrading rooms (below par).
2) Average specialty restaurants.
3) Slightly below average buffet.
4) No reservation policy for Specialty Restaurants.
5) Lots of weddings means usually one or more specialty restaurants are booked for wedding parties. Good for them - bad for all else.

Nothing above would keep me from going back but I would be more likely to try another resort or return to one of my favourites.

Well you will definately find DR different than Barbados...but in my opinion it is for the better. Don't get me wrong Barbados is a beautiful Island, standard of living is higher than in the DR, but it is the people of the Dominican Republic that make the difference.

Activities for families:
1. definately take a jeep tour. If it is your first time to the DR, it is a must do. If you don't feel comfortable venturing off into the country by yourself, this is the best way to see the country. They will take you into the country, you will get to see schools, how people live, they will usually take you to a waterfall or blue lagoon, depending on what tour you go on. they provide lunch and lots of rum through out the day HINT: If you decide before you go that you want to take one of these tours be sure to bring some things for the kids. Last time I took pencils, crayons, hair clips, candy. Every little thing is so appreciated and the smiles on the kids faces is priceless.

2. If windsurfing is your thing, go to cabarete. It is famous for its surf.

3. Spend the day at the beach in Sosua. Take in a glass bottom boat ride or go snorkling. Or just enjoy the atmosphere.

4. Day trip to puerto plata. Take the cable ride, rum factory, amber museum.

5. If you want to swim with the dolphins, go to ocean world!

Trust me there are tones of things to do in the DR especially on the North Coast that honestly a week isn't enough time. Hope this gives you some ideas.

As i dont have anything plans as yet, I'm getting as much info as poss about the area that i fancy staying in.
as i said i'm looking for the holiday to include family entertainment
