Default Occidental Allegro Playa Dorada

Firstly i'd like to say - still love the site! I got some great information on the run up to our first vacation in the DR (1999), and it looks like the site is going from strength to strength.

We are planning our forth vacation in September this year and can hardly wait. We tried Cuba last year. My opinion - nice, but cannot compare to DR.

I would love to hear the views of previous guests of the Occidental Allegro Playa Dorada. Do's? Don'ts? Rooms to aim for & avoid? etc. etc. If you've been already tell us now - If you are planning a vacation there post a reply when you get back.

We've already learned to avoid the 'Holiday Reps' - how they get away with warning us not to leave the resorts is beyond me - I guess some of us (British Tourists) are just too gullible!! My advice - live a little, just don't be stupid!

Anyway, looking forward to hearing your views good or bad.

Roll on Sept 18th.

I have stayed in this hotel twice. Once in 2001 and another time last year. The rooms that we favor are the ones facing the quiet pool. The others face the sea but its obscured a bit by all the trees.

It has the best casino in Playa Dorada (IMO). Also the hotel is literally 'smack-bang' on the beach. The activity pool runs parallel with the beach (no little marsh to walk through here - not that it has ever bothered me anyway).

If there is anything specific that you want to ask me then feel free to e-mail or PM me.

I am sure you will have a great time!

Hello,

We stayed at this hotel in March/April of this year for two weeks and had a wonderful stay. The food was very good - something for everyone. They had theme nights for the food, German, Italian, Dominican, etc., and it was always fun to see what was on the menu from one night to the next.

Our beautiful room had two balconies and overlooked the Action Pool which abutted the beach. What a marvellous view and fabulous way to wake up each day...to the sound of the waves. Now the Action Pool is loud for a couple hours in the afternoon and until about 10:30 at night, but we didn't mind. The view and the spacious room made up for any noise that might have bothered us.

The staff were friendly and very accommodating. The cleaning staff kept the room immaculate. The front desk staff acted quickly to get me medical care when I came down with an ear infection two days before we were to come home.

There were plenty of activities for people, if they chose to be active. The recreation staff were a hoot and we sure enjoyed them a lot. They organized dance lessons and gave shows each evening to entertain us. There is also a children's program where they entertain the kids. We don't have any young children so I don't know all the info on that, but the kids would perform each evening in front of the adults on the terrace. They taught the kids songs in English, French, Spanish and German. That was fun to hear.

My husband and I were amazed when we had servers putting bottles of Presidente beer on our table out on the terrace, even though we hadn't ordered them! Did the plane go down? Are we in heaven? The drinks were amazing...and we just enjoyed ourselves a whole lot. Now for four days it rained, but there were ample areas inside where people could sit and relax...without having to be cooped up in their rooms all day.

We had such a wonderful time that we plan to return to the same AI next year. But don't limit yourself to staying on the resort all the time. Puerto Plata and Sosua are worth the cab fare to visit. We went to Sosua twice and POP four times. My husband speaks Spanish, but most of the cabbies understand English. There are also tours that can be purchased either in the hotel from the various tour guides, or take the 5-minute walk down the street to the Playa Dorada shopping plaza and check out the tour prices there.

I hope this helps and I am sure you will have a wonderful time.

Wonderful Resort!!! Taxi's from Cabarete: Tourist Taxi's ... Pricey, esPecially if you let them riP you off!! If you venture to walk to the street outside of Playa Dorada ... which is about a 10 minute walk from this hotel, you can use Public transPortation which wont cost you more than twenty five Pesos at any given time during the day.. and if you find an emPty carrito, you Pay him 200 RD and he wont let anyone else in the car and then for an extra fifty he will take you straight to your hotel and thats cheaPer than what a tourist taxi will charge you .. but it is hard to find an emPty one!!
