best cambio in Cabarete
Hello everyone,
I have to go get my money sorted today, so....
I've looked through all the money posts and it seems my smartest move is to buy US travellers cheques with my Euros. I know a lot of you say bring cash, butI'm not inclined to, so don't mind losing a few bucks with the cost of cheques etc.
My question is, which is the best cambio for exchanging cheques in Cabarete and is their a preferred travellers cheque brand to use. I haven't used travellers cheques in ten years, but when I did used to use them, I always bought American Express. Still the best bet???
Thanks again everyone.

The best cambio in Cabarete is in Sosua!
Unless another member adives otherwise, I do not know of a Cambio in Cabarete that does not utilize "mafioso tactics" and pay 2 RD Pesos under the current Tasa! The new Casino actually gave me a real rate, good luck!
Yes, AMEX cheques are fine in USD.

Agreed Going to Sosua is better
If you have to change in Cabarete, please check out the Western Union. I am not sure if they will take travelers checks, but they would give a better rate than on the street if they do take them.

Bank of Nova Scotia in Cabarete
I walked into the B of NS in Cabarete and received as good a rate as I have seen since arriving Feb 10 2006 and it was 34.10 to 1 US $
Had to show ID though (Ont DL was fine)
Is it better to go to Sosua today?

Changing money to pesos??
Well, I had no clue how to go about this or where would be the best place, but.....because a friend who is familiar with things in Cabarete/Sosua was with me, he did the dealing, so to speak. He is a Canadian, and speaks limited Spanish. All he has to say was...."no way amigo,,,it is much cheaper is Sosua" and next thing you knew,.....we were getting 36 to 1 u.s. dollar. I used the same tactic at some of the vendors selling beach bags, shirts, etc. I said,,,,oh no....too much!!! It is much cheaper in Sosua. It just seemed to me that Cabarete folks will do most anything to out do Sosua???!! Yeah, don't ask me, it was my first time there, but it worked almost everytime!!
Good luck.

When did you get "36:1"?
The highest the tasa has been in a year is RD35:1 .
Maybe you got 34 when it was 32 in Cabarete.
Maybe in Euros....but NOT USD!
Just a fact check.

I tell no lies!!
For those of you questioning......It was in Cabarete, not far from Windsurf resort, we were walking down the road, with no thought of exchanging money yet, as we were just sort of getting a quick intro as to where you go, and what you do. I really didn't need to change money at that particular time, but because I was naive totally to the entire way of life/etc.in D.R. I took advantage of a friend who seem to know what he was doing. They sit in those little stands, and call out to you telling you they make a deal, good rate, and you call back and say you don't really need it right now....what is the good deal. When they say best I can do is 34.50, my friend spoke up and said...you can do better. I thought it was a no go, and like I said, didn't really care at that point, just too much to take in....and with that talk of Sosua much better and walking away, it just happened. He did want us to change a lot of money, but that was not a problem either. This happened in January/06 . The next time at end of week when I needed more money, I ended up paying 34 1/2. The "Sosua" story didn't work quite as well for me, but...I figured I had done all right. I guess it must have been good luck, by what I have read, but nonetheless, it happened. I will consider myself very lucky!!
