Sosua is 100% "touristy", with nighttime activities suited for the party environment. Being that it is geared for tourists, your lack of Spanish is no problem.
Just be very careful, even though Sosua is a small beach town, crime can be as bad as any large city.

skeedone:
I can only say one thing, as a 20 something female who just recently travelled to Playa Dorada, I can tell you that it is NOT what you are looking for. I have done some research since, as I enjoyed my vacation, but hoped for more action both during the day and night. All signs have lead me to Sosua!!! The people of DR1 know what they're talking about.
Also, you are kind of contradicting yourself in what you want. First you say you want a tourist area without a lot of locals, and second you want hookers (which are no doubt locals).

in resonse to the last comment, i want to see locals and still be a tourist, i.e. its like if you were coming to new york and i recommended the bronx as a good place to stay (obviously the bronx has plenty of locals and things to do but is the not the ideal place for a visitor). sometimes the line is very thin and thats all i was trying to convey. i basically want to have a great time meeting girls, drinking, dancing, but we are 4 guys from ny and i don't want to stick out like a sore thumb. so it seems that sosua is the best of both worlds.

I think you just need to make a decision and go for it. I was a bit like that last December, indecisive.
One important thing, don't just get stuck in Sosua all the time (or any other place you choose) . There are a lot of things happening in the area, and you always have the option of going to Cabarete, Puerto Plata and even further a field. The combination of all of them almost certainly satisfies all tastes and needs (remember you need to be mobile and explore - if you get tired that is, I didn't !).

Where did you find that?
Who in New York did you ask that has never heard of Sosua?
You have two choices:
1- Stay at an AI and you can tell everyone how boring your trip was
2- Go to Sosua and most of what you do you will want to keep secret

well thank you for all your help, sosua i guess it is, as far as who from ny has never heard of sosua, practically no one has. new yorkers know punta cana, santo domingo and puerto plata. my good friend who is dominican never heard of sosua and his grandparents still live on the island, so who knows. thanks again, if anyone has a good hookup in sosua please give me their number. and finally waterfront vs. europa any ideas?

Both would serve your purpose. The Waterfront is right on the beach, but a short walk to the center of nighlife activities. Europa closer to nightlife, but a short walk to the beach. Your decision to make.
