It is just my childhood spent in poverty without beautiful American unlimited luxury and glamorous overspending that makes me deep in my mind again and again try to help people to save wherever it is possible to save. To stretch their hard earned dollar. Too late to change.
And in all honesty - overcharging those unaware tourists $25 for a 10 minute ride ( 2.5 miles, $10 per mile)) - is a shameless rip-off in my understanding. For many people this taxi experience is their first ever experience of this beautiful country. And it is rip-off. $300 RD will be a very correct price.
Sorry for being in minority fias!

I too come from a poor family. I stated the reason why I take a taxi rather then renting a car. I never said that the fare was reasonable. I know that the $25 for a 10 minutes right is too high, but in my situation is worth it. In my family we had about 6 vehicles total by reckless drivers. And to top off the medical expenses for the parties involved.
If you know your way around you will find someone who charges the $300 pesos....I had in the past. Yes it is unfortunate for the first time tourists that don’t know any better.
I don't know why there is always the assumption that one is rich.
If I was I would not be taking the taxi instead I would have a personal driver or a limousine pick me up.
And for the record I love taking the public transportation from Sosua to Puerto Plata, which you should know is very uncomfortable...but very interesting.
Or Maybe I should take the walk is only 2.5 miles.
My two cents
