I know people who went there by themselves and there were guides waiting at the bottom to be hired.
They didn't happen to mention any gear, but they didn't mention any lack of it either.

It is my understanding that a guide may not take you up without the equipment. It is available on site.

It is now required. I went for my third trip to the falls in May, and unlike the two previous trips the guides would not allow us to go without helmet and life jacket.

Oh, and a word to the wise: wear GOOD sneakers when you go, and expect to get them totally wet (I bring a "sacrificial" pair...). Your feet will thank me for this suggestion. You'll be walking on a bazillion rocks.

Is Damajagua Falls in the Bao river? I was in the river up near La Placeta and I was wondering if is possible to go rafting, the current is strong and the river is deep. It was very nice up there, clean and the water very cold.

A couple of Rio Damajagua pics:

Where the river hike starts...note the ladder above the falls...

One of the "jumps"...

A rock slide...

I've done it many times, there are about 20 guides looking for customer by the road side, all wearing "River Guide" tank tops. It costs approx 200 pesos per person to do all 27 falls, take as much time as you want. Extra 70 pesos for lifejacket and helmets. Always lots of fun. Don't need to go with an excursion.

In fact, the smaller the group, the more enjoyable, IMO.
