Towns & hotels, West of POP

I have a couple of days to spend, and would like to check out the north coast west of Puerto Plata. I’m thinking about either Luperon or El Castillo. I’m looking for a mellow-ish place with a beach, but also a small town where it’d be possible to get something of a glimpse of local life. Would one of these places be better than the other, and why? I’ll be traveling by public transport. I’d also appreciate any hotel recommendations for either of these places. I’d like to stay somewhere moderately priced, relatively close to a beach, but NOT an all-inclusive resort. Thank you!

There are plenty of places in Luperón. Don't know about El Castillo or La Isabela.

In Punta Rucia there are a couple of places, as most of you know.
Not much town life, however.
