I don't find the traffic to be a problem in Cabarete, as a pedestrian. But if parking was banned from the centre the through traffic would flow easily, and as a result, quickly. It would then become more dangerous for pedestrian. Either build around the town or leave it alone.

" The concept of yielding to oncoming traffic in a third lane will be very interesting to observe and a potential nightmare to drive with it"

Most two lanes I drive around here have "oncoming traffic" in the third middle lane. So Mike this is nothing new. I especially like the NO REBASE sign between Cab and Sosua and the road has a dotted line on it in the same area. Or the Cherimicos sign pointing to the right at the light by Caribe tours. However that is a one way street in the opposite direction

Not that I believe they can actually do a third lane and speed up traffic flow, but if they did, you're absolutely right, it would be way more dangerous for pedestrians, and there's hardly a town in the country with as many pedestrians out on the highway.

Bob K of course is right about the already present, but invisible middle lane we already have. I call it the "bike lane" because it is most often used by motoconchos passing you on the left as you are in the process of turning left. I have also seen what I call the New Jersey extra lane (aka The Shoulder of the road) being used more often as a passing lane, more often than not when you are trying to take a right turn. These things all just keep your reflexes in shape.

Back to the topic of Cabarete's third lane. Yes it would be a disaster for pedestrians. But wait, they could create contracts to build pedestrian overpasses. Or with Leonel's predisposition to things subterranean, they could be underpasses complete with pumps to keep them dry. Or a set of pedestrian walk lights that would work for the first two or three months, stopping all traffic dead each time they were used. See how many solutions there are and I am sure we can think of more.

Install those digital countdown traffic lights which we have in PP, all pedestrians wishing to cross the road amass together & the minute the light is in their favour they should emit a blood curling war cry as in 'Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war!!' rotate their halberds above their heads and belt across the road as quickly as their legs will carry them. Alternative war cry for the classics scholars amongs us: Me transmitte sursum, Caledoni! (look it up )

That's funny they do that in Quebec
Guess the idea for the third lane must be from one of the well known investers in Cabarete ( LOL) trying to shift focus to the west end of Cabarete.

Default Has the bypass idea been resurrected?

Reading the proposals in Leonel's inaugural speech, I see mention of the "Cabarete side road" being amongst his list of priorities.

Does anyone know if this refers to the long promised bypass and if it is any further forward than when this thread fizzled out almost a year ago?

Default Una via lateral

I have just done my research, as I should have done before posting, and the President's speech actually refers to the construction of "una via lateral" for Cabarete, which my dictionary helpfully doesn't include. However, apparently a bypass is a "carretera de circunvalacion", at least in Spanish Spanish, so I am really none the wiser....

Is anyone else?

Linda.

That would be exactly what you are talking about, a lane "off to the side".
I have pix of the proposed layout, if you want them.

Default Cabarete Bypass

I'd appreciate that very much. Thanks.

Please PM me if you have them in digital form or if not I could call by and pick them up.
