car rental or public trans?

i'm leaving tomorrow morning for the DR for my first visit. I'm staying in Santo Domingo for one night then taking a bus up to Puerto Plata/Sosua...
Initially I was thinking about renting a car... Money isnt that big of an issue, but would it be better to just take public transportation? would it actually be any cheaper than renting a car? i was kinda going for the convenience of having the freedom to drive where and when i want...
and if i was to rent a car, where do i get one? i was originally thinking of going to the POP airport to rent a car, but are there commercial car rentals in sosua? or near any caribe tours bus stops?

Yes go into central Sosua and you will find car rental agencies

I would personaly reccomend Melody cars - just opposite Bon Ice Cream. Decent quality at a reasonable price.
